Conclusion of Cooperation Project with the Serbian Ombudsman
Last week, the National Ombudsman of the Netherlands, Reinier van Zutphen, together with several staff members, attended the official closing of a cooperation project with both the national and local ombudsmen in Serbia. In the presence of the Serbian Ombudsman, Zoran Pašalić, and a big representation from the national office and several local Serbian ombudsmen, the project was concluded.

NHRIs reveal key developments and challenges impacting rule of law across the European Union
For the sixth consecutive year, National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) in the European Union (EU) have provided insights into their national rule of law landscapes. Overall, these show negative trends in areas such as the enabling space for NHRIs, civil society space and human rights defenders, access to justice, and media freedom. Despite the concerning picture, NHRIs continue working to counter these challenges and some progress is evident. Building on this, they recommend how policymakers can strengthen the rule of law across the EU.

Ombudsman probes enhanced management of countryside ancillary tourist facilities to pursue “tourism is everywhere”
The Ombudsman, Mr Jack Chan, on 29 May 2025 announced the launch of a direct investigation operation to examine the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government’s management of countryside ancillary tourist facilities to align with its efforts to develop green tourism and the pursuit of the ideas of “tourism is everywhere” and “sightseeing all over Hong Kong”.

House Business Committee approves the Ombudsplan 2025
The House Business Committee presided over by the Speaker of the House, the Hon. Dr Anglu Farrugia, convened in a special session to discuss the Ombudsplan 2025. The Ombudsplan is a report requesting parliamentary approval for its financial allocation for the upcoming year. In his opening remarks, the Parliamentary Ombudsman, Judge Joseph Zammit McKeon, presented the key themes outlined in the Ombudsplan 2025.

CY Issues Correction to Hsinchu County Government for Dereliction of Duty in Blocking Legal Residents’ Passage
A legally constructed building located on a road section in Guanxi township, Hsinchu County has been placed with various barriers and obstacles in front of its entrance by perpetrators since 2020. Despite repeated petitions from the residents, the Hsinchu County Government failed to provide an appropriate response. The Control Yuan members Lin Yu-Jung and Shih Chin-Fang conducted an investigation and concluded that the Hsinchu County Government was derelict in its duties.

The IOI introduced a publication series of Best Practice Papers (BPPs) with a view to providing guidance material for strong and independent Ombudsman institutions. Revised versions of two papers of this publication series, namely the BPP on ‘Developing and Reforming Ombudsman Institutions’ and the BPP on ‘Dealing with challenging behaviour’ are now available on the IOI Website.

Provincial Ombudsman, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pakistan visited district Torghar, Battagram and Kolai Palas
After successfully conducting the awareness campaign under the regional subsidy 2021-22 in District Hangu and Thall, another campaign was organized in three far-flung districts i.e. Battagram,Torghar and Kolai Palas. All the three districts are located in hilly and backward areas of the province. As per instructions of Ombudsman Syed Jamalud Din Shah, the awareness sessions were organized in District Administration Halls for public elected representatives like Nazimeen, Naib Nazimeen and Village Councilors. The purpose of the awareness session was to communicate the message of the Ombudsman about this prestigious Institution regarding the role and responsibilities of the Provincial Ombudsman Institution and how they can benefit from this Institution free of cost.

Ombudsman concludes Round Table Conference on the Impact of AI in the Labour Market
The Parliamentary Ombudsman, Judge Joseph Zammit McKeon, delivered the concluding remarks at the round table conference “The Ripple Effect of AI in the Labour Market” held in Valletta. The event was organised by the Malta Chamber of Commerce, the General Workers Union, and the Malta Business Bureau as part of the EU-funded TransFormWork II project, which aims to promote a just transition toward the work of the future through better and more effective regulation of artificial intelligence.
