    Ombudsman says Victoria must continue to address workplace culture and human rights

    Despite prisons being inherently challenging environments, it is disturbing that allegations of excessive force against prisoners do not appear to be declining, Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass said. In 2019 and 2020, the Ombudsman began investigating complaints about the unreasonable use of force at the Metropolitan Remand Centre and Metropolitan Assessment Prison.

    The year 2021 was intense and full of challenges in Lithuania. The country continued to fight the coronavirus pandemic, while migrant flows from Belarus reached the Lithuanian border at the beginning of the summer. The challenges of managing irregular migration have forced state institutions to consolidate their efforts to address national security and human rights issues.

    Federal Ombudsman publishes Summary of Annual Report 2021

    The Federal Ombudsman was established on 3 January 1997. 25 years on, more and more people are calling on them for help. In 2021, they opened 8,202 new files. That is a 9 % increase compared to 2020 and a 20 % increase compared to 2019. That rise was due to the corona crisis which continues to take its toll on the relationship between citizens and the public administrations.

    The Ararteko showcases a pioneering restorative justice experience at the European Forum for Restorative Justice

    Roberto Moreno, the officer in charge of justice affairs at the Ararteko’s office and himself an expert in restorative justice, is participating from June 23 to 25 in the biennial conference of the European Forum for Restorative Justice. There, he will present a pioneering experience: a restorative circle carried out in 2020 at the Office of the Ararteko, the Ombudsman for the Basque Country.

    Federal Ombudsman presents annual report 2021

    On 2 May 2022, the Federal Ombudsman published its 2021 Annual Report and presented it to the Chamber of Representatives. The Office opened 8,202 files in 2021, which is a 20 % increase compared to 2019. In 2021, 1 complaint in 5 was still coronavirus related. Complaints about unemployment benefits continued to be rife.

    Two new commissioners take office at the People’s Advocate institution

    Two new Commissioners of the People's Advocate have been elected by the Albanian Parliament and have already started their duties at the largest human rights institution of the country. Ms Olta Aliaj is the Commissioner of the Section for the Protection and Promotion of Children's Rights. Mr Ahmet Prençi is the Commissioner of the NPM. Both Ms Aliaj and Mr Prençi come from prominent careers in the field of justice and human rights in Albanian institutions.

    Ombudsman pushes Royal Thai Police to streamline criminal record database

    In 2020, the Ombudsman received a complaint from the Faculty of Law of Thammasat University, in relation to the Royal Thai Police Regulation on fingerprinting and record keeping. Pursuant to this regulation, information remains in the criminal record database, even when the prosecutor decides not to press charges.

    On 23 June 2022, the Acting Commonwealth Ombudsman, Penny McKay, published a report on the National Disability Insurance Agency’s (NDIA) preparation to meet the Participant Service Guarantee (PSG). The report is the result of an investigation into the NDIA’s preparation to meet the PSG, which was introduced into legislation in Australia on 1 April 2022.
