    Chief Ombudsman of New Zealand elected Second Vice-President

    Peter Boshier, Chief Ombudsman of New Zealand, has been elected Second Vice-President of the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI). IOI Secretary General Werner Amon congratulated Mr Boshier on his election, underlining the enormous commitment he has shown to the organization since he was first elected to the IOI Board of Directors in 2016.

    The Council of Ministers will introduce the national policy and plan for the development of digitality for the economy and society in accordance with the Commission's recommendation. That development of digitality is of economic and social value for the whole nation.

    New Public Services Ombudsman for Wales appointed

    Michelle Morris took office as the new Public Services Ombudsman for Wales on 1 April 2022. She was previously Managing Director of Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council.  Prior to that she worked for Highland Council in Scotland, for 10 years.

    Ombudsman criticises care home for not providing records of how it spent resident’s money

    The Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman looks at individual complaints about adult social care services in England, regardless of whether that care is paid for or arranged by a local authority or privately. Where its finds fault that has caused injustice, the ombudsman makes recommendations to put things right for the individual, as well as recommendations to improve services for everyone. An Adverse Findings Notice is published in the very rare cases where the ombudsman is not satisfied an independent care provider has carried out its recommendations.

    Underaged prisoners and their possibilities of attending school and studying

    The law and international recommendations require that minors in prison are kept separate from adults. According to observations made during prison visits of the Parliamentary Ombudsman, this does not happen. Prisons do not have suitable facilities for accommodating minors that are separate from adults.

    Secretary General meets Under-Secretary-General for Policy in the Office of the United Nations Secretary-General

    On 12 April 2022, IOI Secretary General Werner Amon met H.E. Volker Türk, Under-Secretary-General for Policy in the Office of the United Nations Secretary General at the UN Headquarters in New York. Mr. Amon and Mr. Türk discussed the UN Secretary-General’s “Common Agenda” and perspectives for the IOI to contribute to an inclusive and networked multilateralism for sustainable development, as the only global network representing Ombudsman offices in all world regions.

    Chancellor of Justice Ülle gives oath of office before parliament ahead of second term

    Ülle Madise, who was appointed for a second term as Estonian Chancellor of Justice, gave the oath of office in the Riigikogu on 4 April. Parliament approved Madise’s second term on 15 December last year. In a secret ballot, her continuation in the role was supported by 63 MPs, with 18 against and one abstention.

    Ombudsman Angola and Public Protector of Zambia sign Memorandum of Understanding

    Angolan Ombudsman, Hon. Antónia Florbela de Jesus Rocha Araújo, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ombudsman of the Republic of Zambia, Hon. Caroline C.Z. Sokoni, with the aim of sharing best practices within the scope of the Ombudsman's activities and safeguarding the fundamental rights of citizens of both parties.

    Improved cooperation needed to tackle poverty among single parents and children in the Caribbean Netherlands

    The Dutch National Ombudsman Reinier van Zutphen, also acting on behalf of the Ombudsman for Children Margrite Kalverboer, on 7 April 2022 presented the report 'Caribbean children pay the price' to Alida Francis, government commissioner of St. Eustatius. The State Secretary responsible, Alexandra Van Huffelen (Kingdom Relations and Digitisation) also received a copy.
