The role of Ombudsman institutions in open government
We are pleased to share with you the OECD Report “The Role of Ombudsman Institutions in Open Government”. The report is the first of its kind as it documents the central that Ombudsman institutions play in the global open government agenda. It is based on the data from 94 Ombudsman institutions in a total of 65 countries worldwide. It was prepared by the OECD, with the assistance of the European Ombudsman and several Ombudsman Networks, among them the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI).

Family violence report released
The National Human Rights Institution (NHRI), part of the Office of the Ombudsman of Samoa, has completed its public inquiry into family violence, its first national inquiry. Headed by Samoan Ombudsman Maiava Iulai Toma, the inquiry commissioners began work on the report in late 2016, and it was publicly released in September 2018.

30th APOR Conference held in Auckland
The 30th Australasian and Pacific Region (APOR) Ombudsman Conference was held in Auckland, New Zealand from 28 – 29 November 2018. Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier invited colleagues and guests to New Zealand to discuss how Ombudsman institutions hold governments to account in a changing climate.

Second Ombudsman appointed
On 17 December 2018 Ms Gwendoline E. Mossel took the oath of office before Parliament. Ms Mossel has officially assumed her post as the country’s second Ombudsman on 1 January 2019. She follows Dr. Rachnilda Arduin, who was honorably discharged on 31 December 2018.

IOI History
In order to commemorate the 40th anniversary of its foundation in 1978, the IOI decided to embark on a publication project and commissioned Professor Richard Carver, Senior Lecturer in Human Rights and Governance at Oxford Brooks University, with the task of writing a “History of the IOI”. Print copies of Richard Carver's book on “A Mission to Justice – The International Ombudsman Institute 1978-2018” can be purchased from the IOI.

NPM visited 21 places of detention until August
From the beginning of this year until mid-August, the National Prevention Mechanism (NPM) of Portugal has carried out 21 monitoring visits to places of deprivation of liberty. Of the 21 visits made, 13 went to prisons, four to Temporary Settlement Centers and Matched Spaces (EECIT), two to Educational Centers and two to places of detention by the police.

Dutch Ombudsman hosts Poldershop on “Ombudsman Tools”
Dutch National Ombudsman Reinier Van Zutphen will host another Poldershop in The Hague on Friday, 1 November 2019. This edition of the Poldershop is about how Ombudsman assess the actions of the government and on what basis they reach their decisions. Input and results from this Poldershop will inform an IOI Best Practice Paper to be published next year.

BC Ombudsperson able to investigate whistleblower allegations under new law
Since 1 December 2019 British Colombia, Canada, has a new law that gives current and former provincial government employees a way to bring forward concerns about wrongdoing in workplace. The Public Interest Disclosure Act gives the Ombudsperson a new statutory mandate to conduct whistleblowing investigations if employees do not wish to report those concerns internally to their employer.

Joint statement in support of the Public Denfender (Ombudsman)
In a joint statement in support of the Public Defender (Ombudsman), the IOI, ENNHRI, GANHRI, EQUINET and the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders underline their concerns about recent actions by the Georgian government relating to a prison visit conducted by the Georgian NPM and the fact that the Minister of Justice exposed video recordings of confidential meetings between NPM staff and prisoners on it social media channels.
