Another new role for the Ombudsman in New Zealand
The Government in New Zealand has announced a proposal aimed at strengthening the independent oversight of the Oranga Tamariki—Ministry for Children systems and children’s issues. The package includes a proposal to give the Ombudsman an enhanced role in overseeing complaints and investigations relating to children and young people in state custody.

The Office of the Ombudsman has added a new section to their website. Summaries of selected cases can be found under the “Outcomes” tab at Ombudsman.ky. These summaries provide insight into specific cases dealt with by the Ombudsman and include details about the resolution of those cases.

The Ombudsman continues its oversight of correctional centres and youth detention in Queensland
Queensland Ombudsman officers provide people in detention with access to an independent complaints investigation service and make visits to centres across Queensland. The Ombudsman has also released public reports about closed environments with recommendations for improvement in policy and practice.

Irish Ombudsman’s Annual Report shows an 11% rise in complaints about Public Services
Speaking at the publication of his annual report for 2018 Mr Tyndall said that the Office of the Ombudsman received more than 3,300 complaints about public services last year. Complaints from the public to Irish Ombudsman and International Ombudsman Institute President Peter Tyndall rose by 11% in 2018.

Ombudsman Bermuda hosted International Ombudsman Conference
The 10th Biennial Caribbean Ombudsman Association (CAROA) Conference concluded on Wednesday at the Fairmont Southampton Resort in Bermuda. The Ombudsman for Bermuda, Victoria Pearman, and her colleagues from the region will be in training sessions with Dr. Victor Ayeni for the remainder of the week.

Commissioner for Fundamental Rights’ view on the effect of a local government decree
The local government ordered a ban on changes on recently purchased, undeveloped land. However, the same ban does not apply to the adjacent plot in local government ownership. During his inquiry the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights established that a ban imposed in such a manner runs counter to the requirement of equal rights stipulated by the Fundamental Law of Hungary.

Council of Europe publishes Antirumours Handbook
This handbook is a practice-oriented sequel of the “Cities Free of Rumours” Guide published in 2015 by the Council of Europe. The lessons learned in recent years coupled with the growth in the number of cities that have joined the ARS and the interest it has generated since then, call for an update and further systematization of the antirumours approach and methodology. The handbook also provides practical examples to help and inspire cities and other stakeholders interested in learning more about this initiative and how to put it into practice.
