The second part of the publication concerns the application of data protection principles in the context of journalism.

    Ombudsman Montreal files Annual Report 2018 with Montreal City Council

    The Ombudsman of Montréal (OdM), Johanne Savard, filed the 15th Annual Report (2018) of their institution. This report includes statistical and general information on the activities of the Ombudsman, examples of files that were handled as well as information on the role and mandate of the office of the Ombudsman. Part 4 of the report is particularly interesting: it provides an overview of all the 2018 OdM interventions for each entity over which the Ombudsman has jurisdiction.

    A new report about National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) and their work on migrants’ human rights has been produced by the German Institute for Human Rights on behalf of GANHRI, the Global Alliance of NHRIs. The report highlights examples of NHRIs’ work to promote and protect migrants’ rights, including several practices from Europe.

    Parliamentary Ombudsman publishes Annual Report 2018

    The Danish Parliamentary Ombudsman, Jørgen Steen Sørensen, has just published the institution´s Annual Report 2018 and as every year the Ombudsman has given many talks on the institution´s work. The talks usually give rise to discussions and questions, mostly about cases the Ombudsman has investigated. But also many questions on what it is really like to be Ombudsman.

    Victoria Pearman, Ombudsman for Bermuda, has submitted her Annual Report for 2018 to the Speaker of the House of Assembly in accordance with her statutory duty under the Ombudsman Act 2004. The Report was tabled in the House of Assembly this morning and is available to the public.

    Serious deficiencies in accessibility - polling stations were not accessible for wheelchairs

    At the request of Parliamentary Ombudsman of Finland, Petri Jääskeläinen, two officials from the Office of the Ombudsman of Finland performed unannounced inspections at the polling stations of eight municipalities in the region of Southern Finland during the European election day on 26 May. The purpose of the inspections was to determine the accessibility of polling stations, the possibilities for inclusion of persons with disabilities, and the realisation of the secrecy of the polls. One of the official conducting the inspection used a wheelchair.

    A woman whose life possessions were sent to the tip, an elderly man who had over $2,000 taken from his account to pay for someone else’s fines, and a person whose file was handled by up to 48 different staff in 14 months.These are among the cases reviewed as part of Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass’s Investigation into State Trustees, tabled in the Victorian Parliament this morning.

    Accessibility to the beach for Persons with Disabilities

    Following an Own-Initiative Report of the Commissioner for Administration and the Protection of Human Rights regarding the accessibility of Persons with Disabilities to the Beaches, all the recommendations of the Report were implemented. In particular, the relevant legislation was amended, access ramps/passageways were built at beaches that did not have and/or the existing ones have been improved, while Seatrac and floating wheelchairs have been placed on other beaches that were not accessible from Persons with Disabilities.
