Ombudsman presents Case Notes 2018 to Parliament

Ireland and Northern Ireland Ombudsman sign MoU on cross-border bodies
The Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman, Marie Anderson, and the Irish Ombudsman, Peter Tyndall, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to provide for co-operation on complaints about North-South Implementation Bodies. The MoU will ensure that users of public services, both north and south of the Ireland/Northern Ireland border, will be able to have complaints investigated efficiently by the appropriate independent Ombudsman.

Roundtable discussion sparks talks for action and change
The Ombudsman in conjunction with the Commonwealth Secretariat recently held roundtable discussions on equality and inclusion understood in the context of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRH) in Namibia. The discussions also included the context of sexual orientation and gender identity in Namibia. The week-long discussions saw stakeholders from the Education, civil society; NGOs, government and other sectors share their experiences and challenges pertaining to the two issues at hand.

Venice Principles on Ombudsman institutions now also available in Italian
On 15 March 2019, the “Principles on the Protection and Promotion of the Ombudsman Institution”, (“The Venice Principles”) were adopted by the Venice Commission. A translation of the text into Italian has been made available by the Office of the Ombudsman of the Autonomous Province of Trento a (Italy).

Director of mental health care centre strictly reprimanded based on Human Rights Defender’s findings
The director of the “Dzorak” mental health care centre has been strictly reprimanded by the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs for his improper performance. The reprimand was based on the shortcomings and violations recorded by the Human Rights Defender during a monitoring visit conducted in the mentioned centre.

Control Yuan impeaches judge for misconduct
In October 2015, the Control Yuan (CY) voted in favor of impeaching a Taipei High Administrative Court judge for sexual harassment against an office assistant. In making its decision, the CY stated that the judge had tarnished the public’s respect for a court judge’s position; his conduct was unsuited to the role of a judge. The CY then sent the case to the Judicial Yuan’s Court of the Judiciary for trial.

Ombudsman Serbia visits Austrian colleagues
On 17 – 18 April2019 the Protector of Citizens of the Republic of Serbia, Mr Zoran Pašalić, paid a visit to the Austrian Ombudsman Board. Ombudsman Pašalić was accompanied by the Head of the Serbian NPM Section, the Serbian advisor on “Urgent Actions” and other staff members from the office. The delegation was welcomed in Vienna by Ombudswoman Gertrude Brinek and Ombudsman Günther Kräuter.

Ombudsman and GIV to form bilateral MOU and the ASEAN Ombudsman Forum (AOF)
On 5 – 7 March 2019, a delegation from the Thai Ombudsman office, headed by Mr. Raksagecha Chaechai, Secretary-General, went on a working visit to Hanoi, Vietnam, and met with key officials of the Government Inspectorate of Vietnam (GIV), fellow Ombudsman colleague in another member State of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The Azerbaijani Ombudsman continues public awareness activities in the schools on gender equality and prevention of violence. In the event which was held at one of the schools of Baku city the specialized advisor of the Ombudsman spoke about the main directions of the activities in the field of gender equality and drew the attention of audience to the concerns on effective combating the violence.

Manitoba Ombudsman releases a report under PHIA about a privacy breach related to MRI services
Manitoba Ombudsman has released an investigation report under the Personal Health Information Act (PHIA) related to the unauthorized disclosure of personal health information of 91 patients who received magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans within the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) between 2008 and 2016. The patients’ health information was disclosed in violation of PHIA to several media organizations.

London council and care home amend policies after giving confusing information about fees
