    International seminar adopts Aosta Declaration

    The Ombudsman of Valle d’Aosta hosted an IOI seminar on the benefits of networking, sharing best practices and supporting colleagues under threat. With the view to promote the Ombudsman concept, participants adopted the Aosta Declaration, which calls for the creation of a National Ombudsman in Italy.

    EU Commissioners meet with three Ombudsman to discuss situation of asylum seekers and refugees

    The Basque Ombudsman, Manuel Lezertua, the Greek Ombudsman, Andreas Pottakis and the Dutch Ombudsman, Reinier van Zutphen, spoke with two commissioners of the European Commission on Tuesday 19 March. The topic was the integration of asylum seekers and refugees and relocation.

    Control Yuan presses MOTC and MOI to review taxi driver license regulations

    The Control Yuan (CY) carried out an investigation after receiving a complaint by a citizen claiming he was being deprived of his right to work by being prohibited for life from holding a taxi driver’s license due to a conviction for attempted murder, despite having already served his prison sentence. The right to work is the right of each citizen to earn a living to survive and should be protected by the government.

    The next Presidential Order on Pardoning was executed

    Upon investigating the appeals addressed by a number of convicts, human rights organizations and the Ombudsman, 431 convicts including 35 women and 14 foreigners were pardoned by the Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, dated March 16, 2019.

    Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Leymah Gbowee visited Rosario

    The Ombudsman of the Province of Santa Fe, Raúl Lamberto, received in Rosario Nobel Peace Prize winner, Leyma Gbowee, in the city of Rosario last Friday, 31st of March 2019. Leyma is a Liberian activist who led the peace movement that put an end to the second Liberian civil war in 2003.

    IGT releases report into the future of the tax

    The Acting Inspector-General of Taxation and Taxation Ombudsman (IGTO), Mr Andrew McLoughlin, welcomes the Government release of the IGTO report into the Future of the Tax Profession. The review was undertaken in response to requests from a broad range of stakeholders including the Commissioner of Taxation. It examined the challenges and opportunities presented by new and emerging digital technologies, along with the accompanying social, policy and regulatory impacts on the administration of the tax system and the tax profession.

    Public Defender presents report on situation of human rights and freedoms

    On 30 March 2019, the Public Defender of Georgia submitted a report on the situation of human rights and freedoms in Georgia to the Parliament. On April 2, the Public Defender presented the annual report to the public. The 448-page report, mainly covers the year of 2018, but also analyses problems that emerged in the earlier period and continued during the reporting period as well.

    Annual contacts to Ombudsman of Iowa exceed 5,000

    Contacts to the Iowa Office of Ombudsman in 2018 reached their highest number in 17 years, according to an annual report released today. Letters and calls from inmates in Iowa’s county jails and their families increased most dramatically – the office fielded 68 percent more jail complaints last year than in 2016. Managed Medicaid complaints held steady after a massive influx in calls from patients and providers in 2017. In sum, complaints, information requests, and special projects in 2018 totaled 5,178. This is more than a 5 percent increase from 2017 and a 29 percent increase since 2013.

    Summer School for the Ombudspersons

    Last July, the first comprehensive summer school for ombudspersons was held, following the example set by countries such as Canada and England, where a special training course for and about ombuds work already exists. The aim of this in-depth summer school was to highlight all the different aspects of the work an ombudsperson carries out.

    The Honourable Wafaqi Mohtasib called on the Honourable President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Dr. Arif Alvi at Aiwan-e-Sadr, Islamabad on Monday, 1st March 2019, and presented the Annual Report of the institution for the year 2018.
