Complaints to the Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman rise for third successive year
A report released today has revealed that complaints to the Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman increased by 15% in the last year. During 2018-19 the Office received 762 new complaints. This is the third successive year in which complaints to the Ombudsman have increased.

IOI History
In order to commemorate the 40th anniversary of its foundation in 1978, the IOI decided to embark on a publication project and commissioned Professor Richard Carver, Senior Lecturer in Human Rights and Governance at Oxford Brooks University, with the task of writing a “History of the IOI”. Print copies of Richard Carver's book on “A Mission to Justice – The International Ombudsman Institute 1978-2018” can be purchased from the IOI.

Ombudsman of Hong Kong presented 2018-19 Annual Report to the public
The Hong Kong Ombudsman, Ms Winnie Chiu, presented to the public today (25 July) the 2018-19 Annual Report of the Office of The Ombudsman. The Office of The Ombudsman (the Office) received 4,991 complaints in 2018-19, slightly higher than the previous year’s figure. Among the complaints received, 205 were concluded by way of full investigation, of which 58 (28.3%) were substantiated or partially substantiated, similar to previous year’s figure of 26.2%.

Ombudsman investigator training in Fiji
Fourteen representatives from seven Pacific countries will undertake Ombudsman investigator training in Fiji next week. The Office of the New Zealand Ombudsman is leading the training which will take a typical complaint through the whole investigation process.

Peer Review Seminar to be hosted in London
The UK Parliamentary Ombudsman will be hosting a seminar on Peer Review in London in conjunction with the IOI on Monday, 23 September 2019. This follows on from the review of his Office which IOI President, Peter Tyndall led in conjunction with the late Caroline Mitchell of the UK Financial Ombudsman and Christian Gill, Lecturer in Public Law at University of Glasgow.

The Network of African National Human Rights Institutions organises workshop on SOGIE-related Complaints Handling, Investigations and Documentation
The Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI), a regional membership organisation of African NHRIs based in Nairobi Kenya is organising a technical workshop on Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Gender Expression (SOGIE) for representatives of NHRIs and SOGIE-related Civil Society Organisations. The workshop will be held on July 23 – 25 in Entebbe, Uganda.

Ombudsman fights for the improvement in publication of court decisions
Public access to court case-law contributes to predictable decision-making by the courts, unification of the decision-making practice and transparency of court decisions, and thus also to promotion of the right to a fair trial. The Ministry of Justice has to provide for proper functioning of online records of court case-law.

Cooperation between the Parliamentary Ombudsman and the Spanish Defensor del Pueblo to reunite unaccompanied minor with family
The Office of the Ombudsman of Malta received a request for cooperation from the Office of the Spanish Defensor Del Pueblo concerning an unaccompanied minor who was given shelter in Malta after departing from Libya, and who claimed to have been separated from his family who were residing in a centre in Malaga.

Constitutional Court bans automatic licence plate recognition
Acting on a petition by the Human Rights Ombudsman of the Republic of Slovenia, the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Slovenia has annulled legislation which allowed police to use systems for automatic license plate recognition (ANPR). The said legislation, such as it was, contravened the constitutional right to protection of personal data. The now-annulled provisions were introduced into the Police Tasks And Powers Act in February 2017 and the Ombudsman filed the said constitutional challenge of legislation in question later that same year.

Ombuds Day – 10 October 2019
This year marks the second annual celebration of a highly impactful profession that has been around for centuries, but still remains unknown. On 10 October 2019, the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Dispute Resolution Section Ombuds Committee invites you to the celebration of the ombudsman profession. Ombuds Day is inclusive of all types of ombuds and will occur on the second Thursday of October each year.
