IOI | FRA and IOI run a breakout session on human rights under pressure at the Alpbach Forum 2019

Human rights defenders are confronted with increasing pressure and even existential threats which jeopardise their independence. What risk situations do they face and how can democracy and the rule of law be strengthened so that Ombudsman Institutions and National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) find an enabling environment?

During this year´s European Alpbach Forum a breakout session organised by the IOI and the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) will tackle exactly those questions. The speakers Peter Tyndall, IOI President and Ombudsman of the Republic of Ireland, Michael O´Flaherty, Director of FRA, and Lora Vidovic, Ombudswoman of the Republic of Croatia, will examine the pressure faced by human rights defenders and the role Ombudsman and National Human Rights Institutions play in strengthening democracy and the rule of law.

The Alpbach Forum 2019 runs under the slogan “Liberty and Security” and aims at analysing current developments, causes and driving forces, as well as at delivering new perspectives and orientations.
