The 2021-22 report marks the 55th edition of its kind presented to Alberta’s Legislative Assembly. The number of requests for assistance and complaints about unfair treatment the office received increased slightly over year one of the pandemic with health-related matters remaining at the forefront.

2022-04-01New Public Services Ombudsman for Wales appointed
Michelle Morris took office as the new Public Services Ombudsman for Wales on 1 April 2022. She was previously Managing Director of Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council. Prior to that she worked for Highland Council in Scotland, for 10 years.

2025-07-04Inspector's report on men's rural prison released
On 19 June, the Palen Creen Correctional Centre inspection report was tabled in parliament. The report was prepared by the Queensland Ombudsman, Anthony Reilly, who is also the Inspector of Detention Services. The report makes 27 recommendations for areas of improvement for the men’s rural prison.

The Office of the Ombudsman of Western Australia has commenced a major new function as the Western Australian Charitable Trusts Commission following the proclamation of the Charitable Trusts Act 2022. There is a particular importance to charitable trusts in Western Australia given many are established for the purpose of advancing the interests of Aboriginal Western Australian communities.

2022-06-27Federal Ombudsman presents annual report 2021
On 2 May 2022, the Federal Ombudsman published its 2021 Annual Report and presented it to the Chamber of Representatives. The Office opened 8,202 files in 2021, which is a 20 % increase compared to 2019. In 2021, 1 complaint in 5 was still coronavirus related. Complaints about unemployment benefits continued to be rife.

2025-07-03Paula Sussex is named new Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman
Paula Sussex has been appointed Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) by His Majesty King Charles. She will take up the role from 1 August 2025 and arrangements are now in place, meaning all casework can progress as normal.

2022-05-25Record number of complaints about public services to Ombudsman
Complaints to the Ombudsman about public services, such as those provided by government departments, local authorities and the HSE, reached a record high in 2021. Recently-appointed Ombudsman Ger Deering said that 4,004 complaints were received by his Office - a 17% increase on 2020, and the highest ever in the 38-year history of the Ombudsman.

The Commonwealth Ombudsman, Mr Iain Anderson, visited the Ombudsman of the Republic of Indonesia (ORI) in Jakarta, Indonesia from 15-16 March 2023. This was the first in-person meeting between the offices since 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

2022-12-01Ombudsman welcomes enhanced ability to oversee children in care system
Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier welcomes the enhanced children in care oversight role for his Office. The Act passed its Third Reading in Parliament in August and it will come into effect on 1 July 2023. The Act gives the Chief Ombudsman a greater ability to consider complaints and monitor and investigate systemic issues in this area.

A survey conducted by the Office of the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) found that those most likely to have used the National Health Service (NHS) during the pandemic are least likely to have complained if they were unhappy with the service.

On 16 April 2025, the Ombudsman, Mr Jack Chan, announced the completion of a direct investigation operation into the Government’s regulation of occupational safety and health in the construction industry, with 40 major recommendations for improvement made to the Labour Department, the Buildings Department and the Development Bureau.
