    Cooperation between Austrian and Azerbaijani Ombudsman contributes to solution in tragic case

    The case of a young Austrian athlete who was severly injured in the Olympic village in Baku during the First European Games in 2015 has finally been resolved in part due to the successful international cooperation between Austrian Ombudsman Dr. Günther Kräuter and the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Republic of Azerbaijan Prof. Elmira Suleymanova.

    Commonwealth Ombudsman released NDIA report

    Commonwealth Ombudsman Michael Manthorpe released a report on the 15 May 2018 into the National Disability Insurance Agency’s (NDIA) handling of reviews of decisions under the National Disability Insurance Scheme Act 2013. The report discusses systemic issues highlighted by complaints and stakeholder feedback including significant backlogs, delays in decision making and poor communication practices.

    Ombudsman opens new family room at Mater hospital

    Ombudsman Peter Tyndall Monday opened a new family and patient room at the Mater Hospital, Dublin. The family room is part of the Mater’s “end of life” care service and will give families who are losing a loved one a quiet, comfortable and private space where they can also stay the night.

    Ontario Ombudsman offers special IOI rate for November SYT training

    The Ontario Ombudsman has opened registration for "Sharpening Your Teeth: Advanced Investigative Training for Administrative Watchdogs” training course, and is offering a special rate for IOI members. Register today by emailing training@ombudsman.on.ca. The course takes place November 5-7, 2018, in Toronto, Ontario and covers investigation planning, interviewing, assessing evidence, report writing, and using digital and social media tools to conduct and publicize an investigation.

    The Ombudsman, Ms Connie Lau, on June 4 announced her Office’s initiation of a direct investigation to examine whether there was maladministration in the Government’s decisions and actions in respect of its felling of two trees in front of Tang Chi Ngong Building of the University of Hong Kong on May 20, 2018.

    The Ombudsman Sindh Mr. Asad Ashraf Malik who is also the President Asia Region of International Ombudsman Institution was granted Life Time Achievement Award on 11th May 2018, in recognition of his services to the community in the Field of “Public Service” on the eve of “Engineer Day” by the Institution of Engineers Pakistan.

    Victorian Ombudsman to re-investigate insurers’ handling of workers compensation claims and WorkSafe oversight

    Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass has begun a follow up investigation to her previous Investigation into the management of complex workers compensation claims and WorkSafe oversight. In that 2016 investigation, she found that Victoria’s workers compensation scheme had failed some particularly vulnerable people.

    Parliamentary Ombudsman presents Annual Report 2017 to the President of the House of Representatives

    The Parliamentary Ombudsman, Mr Anthony C. Mifsud, called upon the President of the House of Representatives, the Hon. Angelo Farrugia to present the Office of the Ombudsman’s Annual Report for 2016. During the meeting with the Speaker, the Ombudsman announced that during the Annual General Meeting of the Association of Mediterranean Ombudsman in Skopje, Macedonia, he was appointed as Secretary General of the Association.

    On 30 April 2018 the IOI marked the 40th anniversary of its foundation with a side event at the United Nations in New York, to launch “A Mission for Justice – The International Ombudsman Institute 1978-2018”, a book by Richard Carver to portray the history of the organization and its development over the past 40 years.     Homeless family left in crowded conditions while council delayed making decision

    A mother and her five children were accommodated in a damp and mouldy single bedroom, too small for the number of people, by Ealing council while it took too long to decide their homelessness status. A Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman investigation found the council’s delays added three months onto a six month stay in the unsuitable accommodation.
