Allegations “not substantiated” in matter referred to Victorian Ombudsman by parliamentary committee
In November 2016 the case of the transfer of young people to a hastily configured youth justice and remand centre inside a maximum-security adult prison, became subject to Supreme Court proceedings. Later, the case was referred to the ombudsman by the Victorian Parliament’s Legal and Social Issues Committee. Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass has recommended no further action be taken after investigating the allegations.

Non-smoking unit established in prisons based on the Ombudswoman’s recommendation
A number of convicted non-smokers complained to the Ombudsman that a non-smoking area was no longer delimited in their prison. After the inquiry, the Ombudswoman concluded that the prison made an error when it allowed non-smokers to be regularly exposed to the negative effects of passive smoking. After issuing the inquiry report, the prison established a non-smoking unit for 25 convicts.
