Latest report from Victorian Ombudsman on recommendations - focus on social justice
Inadequate financial support provided to kinship carers and children from disadvantaged backgrounds being expelled from school at a disproportionately high rate are among the issues identified by the Victorian Ombudsman over the past year. Ombudsman Deborah Glass has tabled in the Victorian Parliament her second biennial report on the implementation of her investigations’ recommendations. Her report covers the 125 recommendations she made to state and local government bodies between 1 April 2016 and 31 March 2018.

City council to reconsider school admission appeal after Ombudsman investigation
Nottingham City Council has been told to offer a fresh schools admission hearing to a young boy who needed to move school because of “honour” based violence. The boy’s mother had applied for her son to move into Year Five at the new school, because she wanted him to attend a school that no other family members attended.

IGT Ali Noroozi will not seek third term
The Inspector-General of Taxation (IGT), Ali Noroozi, today confirmed he will not be seeking reappointment for a third term. Mr Noroozi has served in the role for 10 years and during this time has undertaken more than 30 reviews across a broad range of issues, including ATO debt collection, tax disputes, audits, transfer pricing, services to tax practitioners, taxpayer rights, IT upgrades and so-called ‘U-turns’.

Ombudsman of Lithuania and Ukraine discuss human rights issues in Ukraine
The Seimas Ombudsman Augustinas Normantas and the Speaker of the Seimas Viktoras Pranckietis discussed the human rights issues in Ukraine with the Ukrainian Ombudsman Lyudmyla Denisova. The Seimas Ombudsmen's Office together with other Lithuanian organisations implements an EU Twinning project aimed at strengthening the skills of the staff of the Ukrainian Ombudsman institution.

Ombudsman’s Office to take role in monitoring private aged care facilities / court cells
The Office of the Ombudsman will soon be monitoring the treatment of patients in privately run aged care facilities and detainees in court cells. The additional responsibilities were gazetted today. They are in addition to the Office’s current responsibilities under the United Nation’s Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture (OPCAT).

The Hon. Chille W. Igbawua has been appointed as the new Chief Commissioner of the Public Complaints Commission (Ombudsman) of Nigeria. The Chief Commissioner was inaugurated by the Nigerian Parliament on 23 May 2018; his term will run for the next three years.

Victorian Ombudsman investigating State Trustees’ treatment of vulnerable people
Ombudsman Deborah Glass has begun investigating whether State Trustees is acting in the best interests of its vulnerable clients. Ms Glass said the investigation would examine State Trustees’ role as an administrator for people who are unable to manage their financial and legal affairs due to disability, illness or injury.

Human Rights Defender granted leave to intervene as a third party in case pending before the European Court of Human Rights
The European Court of Human Rights has granted the request for leave of the RA Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan to intervene as a third party in the case of Hakobyan v. Armenia. This is an example of international best practice initiated by a National Human Rights Institution.

Ombudsman Sindh takes action against discrimination in police department
Mr. Haseeb Ahmed approached the Provincial Ombudsman Sindh Mr. Asad Ashraf Malik stating that he was son of a Police Officer who laid down his life in line of duty. He was appointed as Police Constable against shaheed (martyr) quota and was not considered for appointment as Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police, whereas 45 other persons were appointed as ASI under same quota and he was ignored & discriminated. He was eligible to be appointed as ASI as he fulfilled the required qualification. This was a glaring example of discrimination.

Niagara Region infringed journalist’s rights: Ombudsman makes recommendations
Ontario Ombudsman Paul Dubé called on the Regional Municipality of Niagara to apologize publicly to a local journalist and a citizen blogger for seizing their property and ejecting them from a council meeting last December. The region’s actions were unreasonable, unjust, wrong and contrary to law, Mr. Dubé’s investigation found.
