A swearing-in ceremony for the leader of two independent offices of the Alberta Legislative Assembly took place on 31 January 2023. Kevin Brezinski is Alberta’s tenth Ombudsman and third Public Interest Commissioner, accepting a five-year appointment to the dual roles.

The reports give legislators real case examples, lessons learned, and proposed amendments to strengthen the Act, based on the Ombudsperson’s experience investigating disclosures of public wrongdoing.

The Office of the Ombudsperson for Children invites Ombudsman and Mediator Institutions affiliated with the International Ombudsman Institute to participate in a 2-day Workshop on the theme “The role of Ombudsman and Mediators in monitoring the situation of children in conflict with the law and deprived of their liberty” to be held in the Republic of Mauritius on 5 and 6 September 2023. This workshop is mainly financed by the International Ombudsman Institute under the IOI Regional Subsidy Programme.

The Office of the Ombudsman of Tonga introduced a new initiative to better facilitate easier public access to the services of the Ombudsman. Six mobile outreach programs (MOPs) covered the smaller villages of Tongatapu not commonly present in previous district outreaches.

2023-05-25Ombudsman probes Transport Department’s arrangements for driving tests
On 18 May 2023, the Ombudsman, Ms Winnie Chiu, announced the launch of a direct investigation to examine the driving test arrangements of the Transport Department (“TD”). The Office has received 40 complaints related to driving tests, involving such issues as candidates’ discontent about the waiting time for driving tests, TD’s early test appointment booking system, the scheduling of driving tests, as well as appeals and arrangements for video recording of driving tests.
