Global Report on Women in Prison - Analysis from National Preventive Mechanisms
National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) from 46 countries contributed to the development of a global report on women in prison, launched on 12 December 2024 by the Geneva-based Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT). The report highlights significant challenges and systemic discrimination faced by women in prisons around the globe, calling for urgent reforms and greater use of alternatives to detention.

The Ombudsman’s Children’s Division has examined conditions for children and young people in the psychiatric sector
In 2023, the Ombudsman’s Children’s Division focused on children and young people in the psychiatric sector by means of a number of monitoring visits. This focus area was chosen because children and young people with a psychiatric diagnosis can be in a particularly vulnerable situation. This is especially true for children and young people who need to be hospitalised in the psychiatric sector.

Ombudsperson investigating province’s distribution of assistance cheques to most vulnerable British Columbians during Canada Post strike
The BC Ombudsperson is investigating the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction’s distribution of cheques intended for income and disability assistance clients during the current Canada Post strike. The Ombudsperson’s investigation was commenced after being advised by the ministry that as of the beginning of December 2024, thousands of November social assistance cheques were not yet delivered.

Ombudsman recommends solutions to Office of Children’s Services
Alaska State Ombudsman Kate Burkhart made seven recommendations to the Alaska Department of Family and Community Services, Office of Children’s Services (OCS), after an ombudsman investigation. The investigation was prompted by a complaint from a foster parent, who alleged OCS conducted an unfair investigation into a Protective Services Report, failed to seek timely mental health services or placement for a child, and made an inappropriate placement decision. The investigation revealed that OCS struggled to find effective solutions for a youth with complex needs and challenging behaviors.

The NSW Ombudsman tabled the Oversight of the Public Interest Disclosures Act 2022 Annual Report 2023–24 in Parliament on 11 December, 2024. The report provides a snapshot of voluntary public interest disclosures made between 1 October 2023, when the Public Interest Disclosures Act 2022 (PID Act) commenced, and 30 June 2024.

New MA course in Ombudsman Law and Governance by the University of Malta to launch in October 2025
The Office of the Ombudsman, in collaboration with the Università ta' Malta, is proud to announce the launch of the Master of Arts (MA) in Ombudsman Law and Governance. This course has been approved through all the University’s academic procedures and will officially commence in October 2025.

Teresa Anjinho has been elected European Ombudsman by the European Parliament with 344 votes in favour. Ms Anjinho will take office on 27 February 2025.

The Ombudsman has investigated transport of inmates in the Prison and Probation Service
The Ombudsman’s monitoring visits to institutions for adults in 2023 focused particularly on the Prison and Probation Service’s transport of inmates to court appearances, outpatient treatment and in connection with transfer of inmates from one Prison and Probation Service institution to another.
