Chief Ombudsman issues another stinging criticism of Oranga Tamariki over failure to investigate child assault and violence claims
New Zealand Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier has again issued a stinging criticism of Oranga Tamariki this time over failing to properly investigate reports of assaults and violence against pre-school and primary-aged children. Peter Boshier began an investigation after receiving a complaint from a family member of the children about the way Oranga Tamariki responded to reports of concern.

The NSW Ombudsman’s report - Review of the DCJ Complaint System in respect of its Aboriginal Child Protection functions, was tabled in Parliament on 6 November. The report follows a comprehensive review of the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) system for handing complaints from, or involving, Aboriginal families in the child protection system. The review focused on understanding DCJ’s complaint handling system, the foundational elements underpinning it and how well it is operating in practice.

University of Malta Survey on Ombudsman Institutions
The Dean, Faculty of Laws, University of Malta, a former Senior Investigating Officer with the Office of the Ombudsman in Malta and author of “The Ombudsman: too soft a take on the public administration?” (BDL 2020) is currently working on another, somewhat more ambitious work, this time considering the ombudsman institution from a global perspective. On 31 October 2024, the Ombudsman published the findings of the second ‘own initiative’ investigation, which focuses on the administration of carers’ needs assessments by 4 Local Authorities in Wales – Caerphilly County Borough Council, Ceredigion County Council, Flintshire County Council and Neath Port Talbot Council.

Ombudsman commends public organisations and public officers for exemplary service and puts forward three strategic focuses to enhance public administration
At the 27th Presentation Ceremony of The Ombudsman’s Awards on 31 October 2024, The Ombudsman, Mr Jack Chan, presented the Grand Award to the Hong Kong Fire Services Department, an Award for Public Organisation to both the Social Welfare Department and the Water Supplies Department, the Award on Mediation to the Housing Department, the Customer Services Award to the Immigration Department, and the Information Technology Application and Creativity Award to the Hospital Authority. Individual Awards were also given to 79 public officers.

Ararteko Research Study: Sexist Attitudes among the Youth
In October 2024, the Ararteko-Ombudsman of the Basque Country presented a research “Study on Sexist Attitudes among the Youth and Adolescent Population of the Basque Country”. The research is intended to allow a better understanding of the phenomenon of sexist attitudes among the youth and adolescence and extract a series of conclusions, to use them as a basis for recommendations to support decision-makers and improve public policies on gender equality.

Ombudsperson Punjab Ms. Nabila Hakim Ali Khan Advocates for Women’s Rights at Women University Multan
In a meaningful outreach initiative, the Ombudsperson Punjab, Ms. Nabila Hakim Ali Khan, visited the Women University of Multan to promote awareness about critical legal protections for women. During a seminar held on campus, Ms. Khan discussed two essential legal frameworks designed to protect women's rights: the Protection Against Harassment of Women at Workplace Act 2010 and the Punjab Enforcement of Women Property Rights Act 2021. Her aim was to emphasise the importance of understanding and utilizing these laws to safeguard women’s rights.
