    For the last five years, an average of 420 pedestrians have died in traffic accidents each year. The Transportation and Procurement Affairs Committee of the Control Yuan (CY) has approved an investigation report and submitted a corrective action case to the Executive Yuan on 9 April 2024.

The next publication in the series of IOI Best Practice Papers was developed by the Office of the State Comptroller and Ombudsman of Israel and is based on the immense experience acquired by the Office.

    The new Seychelles Ombudsman

    The new Ombudsman of Seychelles, Mr George Emmanuel Robert, was sworn in on Thursday, 16 May 2024, in a ceremony at State House. At the swearing-in ceremony, Mr Robert stated that he was truly honoured and humbled to have been appointed the fifth Ombudsman of Seychelles and is ready to work for the people of Seychelles to bring the office to the level that it was envisaged since its creation in 1993.

    Chief Ombudsman releases guidance on where whistleblowers can report their concerns

    Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier has released a new guide to help anyone looking to disclose serious wrongdoing happening in their workplace. The Protected Disclosures  Act 2022 is about disclosing serious wrongdoing – sometimes called ‘whistle-blowing’ – and explains the procedures to be followed when making a disclosure, as well as the protections available to those who do make a disclosure.

    The Public Defender summarises his work in 2023 in the annual report

    Stanislav Křeček and Vít Alexander Schorm have presented the Annual Report of their office for the year 2023. They welcomed the fact that ministries and authorities had successfully used the Ombudsman’s findings to correct maladministration in individual cases and to change inappropriate practices. On the other hand, they also drew attention to some topics that remained open, such as the transformation of large institutions for people with disabilities and, above all, the upcoming establishment of a children’s ombudsman.

    DPU guarantees provisional measures to Tapeba indigenous people in the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights

    The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, based in Washington, accepted the request for provisional measures from the Federal Public Defenders' Office to guarantee the rights of the Tapeba indigenous people of Caucaia, a municipality in the metropolitan region of Fortaleza, in the state of Ceará. Resolution 28/2024, issued on 9 May 2024, requires the Brazilian State to adopt necessary measures to protect the life and personal integrity of members of this people.

    With powers endowed by the Constitution and its additional articles, the Control Yuan exercises powers of impeachment, censure, correction, investigation, and audit, as well as receiving people’s complaints and conducting circuit supervision at local and central authorities. Recently, CY published the 2023 Annual Report of Control Yuan.

    Ten students of Hamdard University became Brand Ambassadors for the Sindh Ombudsman Office

    Honourable Provincial Ombudsman Sindh, Mr. Muhammad Sohail Rajput, chaired a workshop held on 29 May 2024 at Hamdard University, Karachi. Honorable Ombudsman Sindh addressed the large number of students and highlighted the key features of the Brand Ambassador Program, initiated through a regional subsidy of the IOI, with aims and objectives to disseminate the information about the role of the Ombudsman, promote civic responsibilities and to raise community outreach through students being inspiring future leaders.

    An investigation of the Ombudsman Commission of Papua New Guinea has resulted in the successful granting of the title of a property to the daughter of an elderly man who had resided with his family in the property for more than thirty years until his demise.

    Malawi's First Ombudsman dies

    The Office of the Ombudsman in Malawi on June 2, 2024 woke up to the sad news of the death of the first Ombudsman in the country the Honorable James Makoza Chirwa. Ombudsman Grace Malera and other members of the senior management attended the funeral on behalf of the office where she hailed all the strides that the office registered during the late Chirwa’s tenure.
