Ombudsman for Children expresses despair at situation facing children in care
On Monday, 8 July 2024, the Ombudsman for Children, Dr Niall Muldoon, expressed his despair at the last volume of case reports published by the Child Law Project. He has also expressed serious concern about the fact that the Child Law Project has not been re-commissioned, and fears that this indicates the shutting down of open communication between the courts and the public in relation to children in care.

Parliamentary Ombudsman submitted Annual Report 2023 to Speaker of Parliament
On 25 June 2024, Parliamentary Ombudsman Petri Jääskeläinen submitted his Annual Report 2023 to Speaker of Parliament Jussi Halla-aho. In 2023, there were a total of 7,124 complaints (6,613 in 2022). This is just over 500 (7.7%) more than the previous year. The largest number of complaints concerned social welfare 1,136 (997), the police 855 (821), healthcare 803 (751) and criminal sanctions 591 (672). In the reporting year, 6,876 complaints were resolved. The corresponding figure in 2022 was 6,857.

Ombudsman urges government action on health issues amid concerns
Virgílio da Silva Guterres ‘Lamukan’, Ombudsman for Human Rights and Justice, has urgently called upon the Minister of Health and her team to address pressing issues affecting hospitals in Timor-Leste. Speaking at Hotel Timor on July 10th, Guterres emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, “We cannot afford to let the situation in hospitals deteriorate further.”

London Borough of Tower Hamlets has agreed to review the way it allocates properties after the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman uncovered it had a long backlog in processing applications to join its housing register. The discovery came when the Ombudsman investigated how the council handled an application from a woman who was resident in its area.
