Five unlawfully detained juvenile suspects released from police custody
Five juveniles were apprehended and arrested during the state of emergency period and detained by the Police Fox Unit at a Police Station for the alleged theft of copper wires within the vicinity of the buildings that were burnt down during civil unrest that took place on 10 January 2024. When the Ombudsman Commission learnt of the predicament it intervened on 22 January 2024 and commenced preliminary enquiry at the Police Station.

Victorian Ombudsman says it's time to fix social housing complaint system
Nearly two years ago, the Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass tabled an extensive report into Victoria’s social housing complaint system. On 15 March 2024, the Social housing complaint handling – progress report was tabled, a follow-up on the 17 recommendations in the 2022 report. It notes advances in some areas, but also identifies a lack of clear action from the Victorian Government on much-needed major reforms.

On 7 March 2024, the Ombudsman, Ms Winnie Chiu, announced the completion of a direct investigation into the effectiveness of the 1823 service in handling complaints and enquiries, and made 13 recommendations for improvement to the Efficiency Office (“EO”).

Italy-Argentina: Bilateral Meeting in the Name of Civil Defense
At the Regional Council of Lazio, a meeting took place between Marino Fardelli, Civil Ombudsman of Lazio and President of the Coordination of Italian Civil Ombudsmen, and Walter Domingo Martello, Vice General Civil Ombudsman of the Province of Buenos Aires. The purpose of the meeting was to exchange experiences between the two institutions, and this goal was fully achieved with a commitment to continue in the future.

On 22 March 2024, the Veterans Ombud Colonel (Ret’d) Nishika Jardine released a report on the unfairness inherent in Veterans Affairs Canada’s (VAC) Pain and Suffering Compensation (PSC) benefit. The PSC benefit compensates Veterans for disabilities related to their service. How VAC pays the PSC benefit directly affects what happens to Veterans’ compensation when they die.
