High-level panel on the importance of Ombudsman institutions’ compliance with the Venice Principles
On 18 May 2026, the President of the UN General Assembly, Ms Annalena Baerbock, convened a high-level panel at the UN Headquarters in New York on the importance of Ombudsman institution’s compliance with the Venice Principles in accordance with General Assembly resolution 79/177. The panel discussion featured Ms. Nadine Mailloux, IOI President and Ombudsman of Montreal, Ms. Angie Cruickshank Lambert, Ombudswoman of the Republic of Costa Rica, and Mr. Rafael Bustos Gisbert, Spanish Member of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe. Table ronde de haut niveau sur l'importance du respect des Principes de Venise par les institutions d’ombudsman
Le 18 mai 2026, la Présidente de l’Assemblée générale des Nations Unies, Mme Annalena Baerbock, a organisé une table ronde de haut niveau au siège des Nations Unies à New York sur l’importance du respect des Principes de Venise par les institutions d’ombudsman, conformément à la résolution 79/177 de l’Assemblée générale. La table ronde a réuni Mme Nadine Mailloux, présidente de l’IIO et ombudsman de Montréal, Mme Angie Cruickshank Lambert, médiatrice de la République du Costa Rica, et M. The Ombudsman of Aruba, Ms. Jurima Bryson, LL.M. participated in the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) Board of Directors Meeting held in Curaçao from 10 to 14 May 2026. During this international meeting, Ombudsmen from various countries gathered to discuss current developments, collaboration, and the future of Ombudsman institutions worldwide.

Public Protector South Africa releases reports on investigations it concluded in the second quarter of this year
The Public Protector South Africa (PPSA) on 30 September 2024 issued its reports based on investigations conducted in the second quarter of the 2024/25 financial year. During this period, the PPSA received 1,489 new complaints, of which 756 were early resolution, 641 related to a lack of service delivery, while 92 were in respect of allegations of maladministration and related improprieties in the conduct of state affairs.

Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights took part in 16th session of the UN Human Rights Council
The Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Ms. Nina Karpachova took part in the ongoing 16th session of the UN Human Rights Council. On 9 March 2011 the Ombudsman made an oral statement at the Annual full-day meeting on the rights of the child focused on children who live and work in the street.

Board of Directors holds annual meeting in Curaçao
The IOI Board of Directors held its annual meeting in Willemstad (Curaçao) from 10 – 14 May 2026. The meeting was generously hosted by the Office of the Ombudsman of Curaçao and provided the perfect setting for productive meetings.

After delivering the Ombudsman’s 2010 Annual Report to Parliament, the Catalan Ombudsman, Rafael Ribó, stated that the complaints taken up in the Annual Report on education, the Dependency Act and housing are evidence of this infringement.
