The Board of Directors of the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) held its annual meeting from 7 – 11 May 2023. Together with IOI President Chris Field, Ombudsperson and IOI Secretary General Gaby Schwarz welcomed colleagues from around the world at the premises of the Austrian Ombudsman Board in Vienna.

IOI 13th World Conference title and logo
During the IOI World Board meeting in Vienna last week, the National Ombudsman of the Netherlands, Reinier van Zutphen, presented to the board the title and logo of the world conference that will be held in The Hague, The Netherlands in May 2024. The Commissioner for Human Rights publishes report “Human rights by design - future-proofing human rights protection in the era of AI”
On 9 May 2023, the Commissioner for Human Rights published her report and recommendations “Human rights by design - future-proofing human rights protection in the era of AI”. She highlights 3 major obstacles and 3 priority areas of actions to ensure human rights are safeguarded in the design, development and deployment of AI. She also emphasises the key role National Human Rights Structures, including Ombudsman institutions, play in monitoring and supervising human rights in AI systems.

PCC makes case for inmates in correctional centres
In his opening remark at a town hall meeting on systemic and proactive investigation into welfare of inmates in the correctional centres in Nigeria at Owerri, Imo State at 10 May 2023, the Honourable Chief Commissioner, Public Complaints Commission, Hon. On 4 May 2023, the Taxpayers' Ombudsperson, Mr. François Boileau, announced his intention to closely monitor complaints received at his office concerning individuals who have already paid back COVID-related benefit overpayments to the Government of Canada yet are still receiving collection letters from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
