NIGERIA | PCC makes case for inmates in correctional centres

The Honourable Chief Commissioner, Public Complaints Commission, Hon. Abimbola Ayo-Yusuf has stressed the need for the Government to create and maintain a conducive environment for inmates in Nigeria correctional centres.

The Nigeria Chief Ombudsman gave this charge on 10 May 2023 in his opening remark at a town hall meeting on systemic and proactive investigation into welfare of inmates in the correctional centres in Nigeria at Owerri, Imo State.

He said, the Commission has for years keenly followed developments in the operations of the Nigeria correctional Service especially as they relate to the welfare of the inmates and has come to the conclusion that there is a great need to improve their welfare.

The Honourable Chief Commissioner said a conducive environment, in which the inmates are respected, engaged in skill acquisition and have equal opportunities for career and personal development will prepare them for reintegration into the society when they complete their jail terms.

He said the Town Hall meeting was convened to interface with relevant Stakeholders with a view to find solutions to the challenges faced by most inmates in order to bring them succor.

He urged participants to come up with practical and enduring solutions that will improve the welfare of inmates and decongest the Correctional centres.

Participants at the Town Hall meeting included officers from the Nigeria Correctional Service, NCS, Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, the Judiciary and many other MDAs and NGOs.
