The Ombudsman of the Kingdom of Thailand and the ACRC of the Republic of Korea jointly sign extension of the MOU
On 8 May 2023, the signing of the MOU on bilateral cooperation between the Chief Ombudsman of Thailand, Mr. Somsak Suwansujarit, and the Chairperson of the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission of the Republic of Korea, Ms. Jeon Hyun-Heui, took place at the Office of the Secretariat of the International Ombudsman Institute in Vienna, in the Republic of Austria.

The ombudsman participates in the Executive and Governing board meetings of the AOM in Kosovo
The Parliamentary Ombudsman, Judge Emeritus Joseph Zammit McKeon, the Maltese Ombudsman, attended the Executive and Governing Board meeting of the Association of Mediterranean Ombudsman (AOM) in Kosovo. This meeting was part of a three-day conference organised by the Ombudsman Institution of Kosovo in partnership with the AOM discussing ‘Integrity and Independence of Ombudsman Institutions: resilience amidst Challenges.’

Annual Report 2022: Time for the citizen
On Wednesday, 24 May 2023, the Dutch National Ombudsman, the Ombudsman for Children and the Ombudsman for Veterans presented their 2022 Annual Report to the House of Representatives: Time for the citizen. In it, they call on the government to listen to citizens more often, sooner and to better effect. Despite having seen some positive examples from the government, the ombudsmen continue to take a critical view, particularly with regard to the influence and control that citizens currently have over the work of the government.

Provincial Ombudsman Sindh publishes latest newsletter
The Provincial Ombudsman Sindh recently published its latest quarterly newsletter covering the period from January to March 2023. The newsletter features the visit of the IOI President, Mr Chris Field, who was invited to Karachi by the Provincial Ombudsman Sindh, Honourable Ajaz Ali Khan. Among others, they gave speeches at the launching ceremony of the research study on “Assessment on Malnutrition (Stunting) in District Tharparkar”, which was undertaken in collaboration with the IOI under its Regional Subsidy Program.

Ombudsman probes Transport Department’s arrangements for driving tests
On 18 May 2023, the Ombudsman, Ms Winnie Chiu, announced the launch of a direct investigation to examine the driving test arrangements of the Transport Department (“TD”). The Office has received 40 complaints related to driving tests, involving such issues as candidates’ discontent about the waiting time for driving tests, TD’s early test appointment booking system, the scheduling of driving tests, as well as appeals and arrangements for video recording of driving tests.

At the invitation of the Kosovo Ombudsman Naim Qelaj, the Human Rights Ombudsman Peter Svetina participated at the meeting of the Association of Mediterranean Ombudsmen (AOM) in Priština, Kosovo. This year, the main topics were the significance of integrity and the independence of national institutions for human rights.

Office of the Ombudsman hosts Hackathon - "Cracking the Challenge: 'Connecting children and youth with the Office of the Ombudsman' "
On 16 May 2023, the first Hackathon of its kind was held at the Office of the State Comptroller and Ombudsman in Jerusalem. Students from institutions for higher education throughout the country, and from different disciplines, joined forces in work teams to brainstorm and find a solution to the challenge set before them: How to connect children and youth with the Office of the Ombudsman? How to acquaint them with the work of the Office and encourage them to use the services of the Office, for themselves and for those around them?

CY Committee on Educational and Cultural Affairs Focusing on Achievements in Earthquake Engineering Research and Volcanic Monitoring
The Control Yuan Educational and Cultural Committee conducted circuit supervision on 24 April 2023, led by convener Pasuya Poiconx, accompanied by CY Vice-President Lee Hung-chun and a delegation of Control Yuan members. They visited the Taipei Laboratory of the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE) and the Taiwan Volcano Observatory at Tatun as well as the Xiaoyoukeng Volcano Continuous Gas Monitoring Station.

The report assesses what NSW Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) has done to improve the response to children who present alone to homelessness services since the Ombudsman’s Office first reported on this issue in 2018. The second report was in 2020; this is the third.
