The report covers all segments of life that directly or indirectly affect the rights of citizens, and it is also a reflection of their perception of how the administration functioned in the previous year through the number of submitted complaints. There is no better benchmark for the (non) functioning of the institutions than the complaints of the citizens who are trying every day to exercise their rights as guaranteed by the Constitution and the law.

Un cerrado apoyo a las instituciones nacionales de derechos humanos que soportan turbulencias internas en sus países y amenazas que pretenden torcer su gestión y el criterio independiente que las cimenta, pronunció este lunes la asamblea extraordinaria de la Federación Iberoamericana del Ombudsman (FIO) que, convocada de urgencia, tuvo una reunión virtual vía Zoom de la que participaron representantes de 14 países.

Can a further pandemic be handled less restrictively in Prison and Probation Service institutions?
Only one out of all inmates in state and local prisons and halfway houses under the Danish Prison and Probation Service has been infected with COVID-19. The Ombudsman finds this very positive. At the same time, however, he recommends, following a recent Ombudsman investigation, that the Prison and Probation Service review its experiences of recent months with a view to determining whether a future pandemic can be handled by means of less restrictive measures.

Public Defender publishes main findings on the handling of applications by the Foreigners’ Police Service
The report is based on an inquiry carried out in October and November 2019 by members of an inquiry team set up by the Office of the Public Defender of Rights. The team visited all Border and Foreigners' Poice Departments existing at the time.

The Greek Ombudsman investigates the Pylos shipwreck case
An independent investigation is initiated by the Greek Ombudsman on the Pylos shipwreck incident. The Ombudsman, Mr. Andreas Pottakis, addressed two letters to the Commandant of the Hellenic Coastguard requesting a thorough internal investigation on any acts or omissions by Coastguard officers in connection to the tragic incident of 14 June 2023.

New monitoring tool shows where Austria falls short in terms of human rights
On 7 November 2023, the Austrian League for Human Rights submitted the midterm report of civil society regarding the UPR of Austria to the UN. In a scientific cooperation with the Austrian Ombudsman Board and partially financed by the Future Funds of the Republic of Austria, the League brought to life an online montitoring tool. In future, this tool shall provide an up-to-date status of the implementation of the human rights recommendations in Austria at all times.
