    Ombudsman Hong Kong presents results of two own-motion investigations

    On 28 June 2017 Hong Kong Ombudsman Connie Lau announced the completion of two own-motioned investigations, namely “The arrangement between Housing Department and Water Supplies Department regarding payment of water charges for common areas and vacant units in public housing estates” and “Food and Environmental Hygiene Department’s criteria for publicising the list of traders involved after issuing a Food Safety Order”.

    Inspector-General of Taxation review into ATO’s Fraud Control Management

    The Inspector-General of Taxation (IGT), Mr Ali Noroozi, has accepted the Senate Economics References Committee’s (the Committee) request to examine how the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) addresses the risk of fraud and associated issues. The Committee’s request follows recent events including those relating to Operation Elbrus and allegations of tax fraud that may be linked to abuse of position by a public official. The IGT today announced terms of reference for this review.

    Last call for IOI regional subsidies 2017/18

    In its efforts to further increase the regional impact of the IOI, the members of the IOI Board of Directors decided at their recent Board meeting in Vienna to continue the regional subsidy programme for the membership year 2017/2018. Institutional members wishing to apply for a regional subsidy can submit project proposal until 1 September 2017.

    Victoria Pearman, Ombudsman for Bermuda, submitted her Annual Report for the calendar year 2016 to the Office of the Speaker of the House of Assembly in accordance with her statutory duty under the Ombudsman Act 2004. The Ombudsman's Annual Report for 2016 reports on the work of the Office from 1st January to 31st December 2016.

    Deputy-Ombudsman criticises children's hearings at foreign missions

    Deputy-Ombudsman Maija Sakslin said she was not convinced that children's rights, legal protection and best interests are implemented in hearings associated with family reunification applications at Finland's foreign missions. The Deputy-Ombudsman investigated the issue on her own initiative and found that questionable and incorrect procedures were in use.

    Ombudsman to publish prison inspection reports

    On Thursday 6 July, the Chief Ombudsman released his Report on an unannounced inspection of Hawke’s Bay Regional Prison. As a National Preventive Mechanism under OPCAT, the Ombudsman inspects and monitors places of detention to ensure people held there are treated humanely and with dignity. The new practice of publishing these reports has been started in the interests of transparency and accountability.

    Victorian Ombudsman to conduct OPCAT-style inspection

    The Victorian Ombudsman will inspect the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre in July 2017. This inspection follows the April announcement of the Ombudsman's investigation into changes needed in Victoria to implement the UN's Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (OPCAT).
