    Number of complaints and investigations in the 2nd quarter of 2017

    A total of 1991 complaints were received in the 2nd quarter of 2017, which is 54 less than in the same period last year. The ombudsman was approached by 1373 persons in matters falling within her competence under the law, which is 46 more than in the second quarter of the past year. Thus, the proportion of complaints falling within the Ombudsman’s mandate increased to 68% (the figure for the last year was 66%).

    Joining the Dots – connecting voices for child-friendly healthcare in hospital

    The Ombudsman for Children’s Office and the Children’s Hospital Group Board have come together with the three children’s hospitals; Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin; Temple Street Children’s University Hospital and the National Children’s Hospital, Tallaght Hospital to design and carry out a consultation process to capture the views of children, young people, their parents and hospital staff.

    Directives of Provincial Ombudsman Sindh to account General Sindh for transfer of family pension

    The complainant, widow of a deceased official of Revenue Department, approached the Provincial Ombudsman Sindh Mr. Asad Ashraf Malik for transfer of pension of her deceased husband in her favour as family pension. The department was allegedly delaying the transfer of family pension.

    Toronto’s two largest school boards have taken steps to prevent another bus driver shortage this fall, after an investigation by Ontario Ombudsman Paul Dubé revealed their “actions and inactions” led to thousands of students being stranded as school began last September.

    Ombudsman Kräuter welcomes South Korean delegation in Vienna

    As part of a study visit to Austria, Germany and the Netherlands, a delegation from South Korea visited the Austrian Ombudsman Board (AOB) on 5 September 2017. The delegation was chaired by Chul-Young Shin, Ombudsman of Gangwon Province, and included representatives from the audit division and general civil service offices of different South Korean cities. The visit served as a platform for a fruitful exchange of experiences between the AOB and the South Korean delegation.

    Declaration of Mexico City on Migration and Human Rights

    The members of the Ibero-American Federation Ombudsman (Federación Iberoamericana del Ombudsman, FIO) – aware of the challenges faced by persons involved in migrations processes – adopted a declaration on migration and human rights. The Declaration of Mexico City emphasizes the concerns of FIO in respect to migratory flows and identifies ways to strengthen the protection and promotion of the human rights of migrants.

    The Ombudsperson for Children of the Republic of Croatia has prepared a questionnaire on the role of psychology in the field of human rights and social justice in order to explore views of individual independent organizations for human rights and Ombudspersons' offices on the matter. IOI members are kindly requested to support this project by filling out the form and sending it back by 8 October 2017.

    National Ombudsmans visits colleague in Poland

    “Independent, impartial and outreaching”; with these three terms Reinier van Zutphen, National Ombudsman of the Netherlands defined the central task of an ombudsman institute. He did so during a press conference at the office of the Polish ombudsman Mr Adam Bodnar. Mr Van Zutphen is also board member of the European Chapter of the de International Ombudsman Institute (IOI). The Dutch National Ombudsman visited his colleague for a two day meeting sharing best practices and experiences.
