Christian Britten Lundblad elected new Ombudsman
On 13 March 2025, the Danish Parliament elected Christian Britten Lundblad as new Ombudsman. He is succeeding Niels Fenger, who in October 2024 took up a position as judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union. Christian Britten Lundblad will take over as Ombudsman on 1 May 2025 after a period with High Court Judge Henrik Bloch Andersen as temporary Ombudsman.

La ineficacia de la Administración frena el progreso social de Cataluña
El 18 de marzo de 2025, la síndica de greuges de Cataluña, Esther Giménez-Salinas, acompañada por su adjunto general, Jordi Palou-Loverdos, entregó al presidente del Parlamento catalán, Josep Rull, el Informe anual de la institución correspondiente al año 2024. Este informe concluye que la eficacia de la Administración catalana debe mejorar, y es que la ineficacia genera desconfianza en las instituciones, afecta a la calidad de vida de las personas, amenaza la sostenibilidad del estado del bienestar, frena el ascensor social y obstaculiza el desarrollo económico.

Falta de supervisión en el mantenimiento de puentes: el Yuan de Control propone medidas correctivas a la Administración de Turismo del Ministerio de Transporte
Con el fin de cumplir las regulaciones de la Instrucción Administrativa para la Gestión y Mantenimiento de Puentes del Yuan Ejecutivo, la Administración de Turismo del Ministerio de Transporte ha implementado mecanismos de mantenimiento y supervisión de puentes con arreglo a la Instrucción Administrativa para la Gestión y Mantenimiento de Puentes en Áreas Escénicas. Sin embargo, no ha desempeñado de manera adecuada sus funciones de supervisión y evaluación. El Comité de Transporte y Adquisiciones del Yuan de Control aprobó el informe de investigación el 11 de febrero de 2025, proponiendo medidas correctivas a la Administración de Turismo.

Sindh Ombudsman Institution takes stock of its brand ambassador program launched to provide accessibility to the general public
The Brand Ambassador program at universities has been initiated through the Regional Subsidy program of the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) in 2022-23 in order to foster a deeper understanding of the mandate and scope of the Sindh Ombudsman Institute and to inform the student-community and general public about its availability for the dispensation of administrative justice and speedy redressal of their complaints, particularly in remote and far flung areas.

Connecting Ombudsman Procedures and Citizens: Advancing Public Engagement and Accessibility in Hungary
The Office of the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights of Hungary has successfully implemented the IOI-supported regional subsidy project “Connecting Ombudsman Procedures and Citizens”. The two-phase initiative aimed at strengthening public awareness of the Ombudsman’s work, particularly in the field of disability rights, and at familiarizing the public with the network of newly established regional offices.

Veterans Ombud Releases Report on Additional Dependant Care Reimbursement
On 26 February 2025, the Veterans Ombud Colonel (Ret’d) Nishika Jardine released a report on Additional Dependant Care, a reimbursement mechanism designed to provide relief for additional dependant care costs incurred by Veterans participating in the Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) Rehabilitation Program. The report found unfairness in the rules for reimbursement that could result in some Veterans not being afforded the same relief as others.

El Mecanismo Catalán para la Prevención de la Tortura solicita alternativas a la prisión para las personas con discapacidad intelectual
En 2024 el Síndic de Greuges ha visitado 35 equipamientos con personas privadas de libertad. El informe de 2024 incluye un monográfico sobre la atención a los internos con discapacidad intelectual en las prisiones, que constata la falta de recursos especializados para atender sus necesidades. La institución pide que se revise la Circular 2/2024 porque contiene restricciones en el acceso al trabajo penitenciario que pueden limitar el objetivo de reinserción de las personas privadas de libertad.

Cinco defensorías del pueblo apuestan por medidas alternativas en la resolución de los conflictos que les plantean los ciudadanos
El 5 de febrero de 2025 se ha celebrado el acto de firma del Acuerdo de las defensorías sobre la cultura de la justicia restaurativa, el diálogo, la conciliación, el acuerdo y la reparación, que busca impulsar las medidas alternativas de resolución de conflictos en las quejas que llegan a estas instituciones de defensa de derechos. El Acuerdo, impulsado por la síndica de greuges, también ha sido firmado por el defensor del pueblo andaluz; el ararteko (País Vasco); la diputada del Común (Canarias) y la arartekoa (Navarra).

On Wednesday, 29th of January 2025, the second Ombuds Academy took place. This event was organized and hosted by the Dutch National ombudsman. The Ombuds Academy is an IOI initiative that focuses on the employees of our institutes, rather than on the ombudsmen.

Own Initiative Investigation into possible systemic maladministration within the Corradino Correctional Facility
In 2021, as a result of persistent media reports, alleging violations of basic human rights and non-observance of prison regulations within the Corradino Correctional Facility, and after NGO “Moviment Graffitti” wrote to the Ombudsman highlighting these concerns, the Ombudsman Mr Anthony Mifsud decided to conduct this investigation in accordance with sub-article (2) of Article 13 of the Ombudsman Act (Cap. 385).

Carmit Fenton Adv. is the new Head of the Office of the Ombudsman at the State Comptroller and Ombudsman Office of Israel
On 2 February 2025, Ms. Carmit Fenton, Adv. entered into her seven-year term of office as Head of the Ombudsman Office. Ms. Fenton was appointed as Head of the Ombudsman Office by the State Audit Affairs Committee of the Knesset (Israeli parliament), upon the recommendation of the State Comptroller and Ombudsman, Mr. Matanyahu Englman.
