Ombudsman Toronto handled 4,326 cases in 2025 — a 78 per cent increase since 2020 — stepping in to help people facing unfair treatment by the City of Toronto amid tough economic times and ongoing housing pressures. The 2025 annual report highlights the growing demand for oversight and accountability during a period of increasing social and economic pressures. Over the past year, the office helped an increasing number of residents, community groups and City staff to resolve fairness issues with City services.

At the Presentation Ceremony of The Ombudsman’s Awards on 8 November 2019, the Ombudsman of Hong Kong, China, Ms Winnie Chiu, emphasised that the promotion of good public administration is the primary focus of the Office of The Ombudsman’s work. Following its complaint handling and direct investigations, the Office makes recommendations for improvement and proactively monitors the progress of implementation. In addition to holding the annual Awards, the Office has introduced a new incentive of issuing appreciation letters to public officers in recognition of their efforts to resolve complaints.

2021-03-30Ombudsman discusses freedom of the media and rule of law in Slovenia
On 26 March 2021, the Democracy, Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights Monitoring Group of the European Parliament which operates in the framework of the European Parliament Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs continued the discussion on the freedom of the media and the rule of law in Slovenia. Ombudsman Peter Svetina has accepted the invitation of the Group, headed by the Dutch MP Sophie in 't Veld, and participated in the second round of discussions in Brussels.
