Ombudsman probes Hospital Authority’s assistive device loan service
On 10 June 2025, the Ombudsman, Mr Jack Chan, announced the launch of a full investigation into the procedures and mechanisms currently employed by the Hospital Authority in providing an assistive device loan service to the public.

The Ombudsman, Manuel Lezertua, steps down from office after ten years leading the Ombudsman of the Basque Country
On 10 June 2025, the Ararteko-Ombudsman of the Basque Country, Manuel Lezertua, officially announced to the Parliament of the Basque Country his decision to step down after ten years in office. The current Deputy Ombudsman, Inés Ibañez de Maeztu, will remain as interim Ombudsman until the Basque Parliament appoints the new Ombudsman.

Thailand Marks 25th Anniversary of Ombudsman Institution with National and International Seminar
To commemorate the 25th Anniversary of its establishment, the Office of the Ombudsman of Thailand hosted a seminar from 24–25 April 2025 at the Centara Life Government Complex Hotel and Convention Centre in Bangkok. The event reaffirmed the Ombudsman’s commitment to a proactive, people-centered approach and brought together stakeholders from government, civil society, and international organizations. To commemorate this milestone, the Office of the Ombudsman of Thailand published a special 25th Anniversary commemorative volume, featuring congratulatory messages and insightful contributions on successful stories from leading Ombudsman institutions across the globe. This publication, supported by the IOI Regional Subsidy Programme 2024/2025, reflects the shared commitment to the values of good governance as well as rights and liberties protection.

Manuel Lezertua presenta su renuncia al cargo como ararteko
Manuel Lezertua Rodríguez ha presentado hoy a la Mesa del Parlamento Vasco su renuncia al cargo como ararteko de la Comunidad Autónoma Vasca, después de 10 años de mandato. Inés Ibáñez de Maeztu Izaguirre, hasta ahora adjunta, será ararteko en funciones hasta que el Parlamento Vasco elija un nuevo titular.

Le vendredi 21 mars, Marc BERTRAND, Médiateur de la Wallonie et de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, a présidé sa dernière assemblée générale du Réseau belge des ombudsmans, Ombudsman.be. En effet, arrivé au terme de son second mandat et donc après 12 années à la tête de l'institution du Médiateur, Marc BERTRAND cèdera son poste dans les semaines à venir.

El Defensor del Pueblo conmemora el 8M con un acto homenaje a las mujeres gitanas
El 7 de marzo de 2025 el Defensor del Pueblo, Ángel Gabilondo, ha manifestado que “las mujeres gitanas constituyen una comunidad que no se rinde a estereotipos ni a tópicos, que no se deja reducir a clichés predeterminados”. Así lo ha afirmado durante un acto institucional que ha tenido lugar en la sede del Defensor del Pueblo el viernes para conmemorar y reivindicar el Día Internacional de la Mujer. En un año en el que se conmemora el 600 aniversario de la llegada de los gitanos a la península ibérica, la institución Defensor del Pueblo ha querido homenajear a la mujer gitana. El lema del evento ha sido “Mujeres gitanas en España: 600 años de desafío y superación”.

Orientation scolaire : un droit souvent entravé, des choix trop souvent subis
Dans un rapport qu’elle rend public le 3 juin 2025 "Le droit à l’orientation dans l’enseignement secondaire : un droit à déployer pour tous les jeunes", la Défenseure des droits alerte sur les failles d’un système d’orientation dans l’enseignement secondaire peu lisible, morcelé et inégalitaire, alors même qu’il engage l’avenir de millions de jeunes. Elle appelle à une prise de conscience collective pour faire de l’orientation un véritable levier d’émancipation, de choix et de prise en compte de la parole des jeunes.

Ombudsman concludes Round Table Conference on the Impact of AI in the Labour Market
The Parliamentary Ombudsman, Judge Joseph Zammit McKeon, delivered the concluding remarks at the round table conference “The Ripple Effect of AI in the Labour Market” held in Valletta. The event was organised by the Malta Chamber of Commerce, the General Workers Union, and the Malta Business Bureau as part of the EU-funded TransFormWork II project, which aims to promote a just transition toward the work of the future through better and more effective regulation of artificial intelligence.

CY Issues Correction to Hsinchu County Government for Dereliction of Duty in Blocking Legal Residents’ Passage
A legally constructed building located on a road section in Guanxi township, Hsinchu County has been placed with various barriers and obstacles in front of its entrance by perpetrators since 2020. Despite repeated petitions from the residents, the Hsinchu County Government failed to provide an appropriate response. The Control Yuan members Lin Yu-Jung and Shih Chin-Fang conducted an investigation and concluded that the Hsinchu County Government was derelict in its duties.

Provincial Ombudsman, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pakistan visited district Torghar, Battagram and Kolai Palas
After successfully conducting the awareness campaign under the regional subsidy 2021-22 in District Hangu and Thall, another campaign was organized in three far-flung districts i.e. Battagram,Torghar and Kolai Palas. All the three districts are located in hilly and backward areas of the province. As per instructions of Ombudsman Syed Jamalud Din Shah, the awareness sessions were organized in District Administration Halls for public elected representatives like Nazimeen, Naib Nazimeen and Village Councilors. The purpose of the awareness session was to communicate the message of the Ombudsman about this prestigious Institution regarding the role and responsibilities of the Provincial Ombudsman Institution and how they can benefit from this Institution free of cost.

Updated versions of Best Practice Papers now available
The IOI introduced a publication series of Best Practice Papers (BPPs) with a view to providing guidance material for strong and independent Ombudsman institutions. Revised versions of two papers of this publication series, namely the BPP on ‘Developing and Reforming Ombudsman Institutions’ and the BPP on ‘Dealing with challenging behaviour’ are now available on the IOI Website.
