    The Ombudsman Office of the City of Zurich celebrates its 50th anniversary. It is the oldest ombudsman office in Switzerland and the oldest municipal ombudsman office in Europe.

    DPU Commits to Three Pledges with the UN for Human Rights in Brazil

    The Federal Public Defenders' Office has entered three pledges with the United Nations for the defence of refugees and human rights. Two of these pledges are related to the Global Refugee Forum 2023, which took place in Geneva, Switzerland, in December 2023, and the third is a commitment proposed by the Equal Rights Trust on the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The objectives of these commitments are to strengthen the defence of human rights in Brazil and protect against discrimination.

    Ombudsman Newsletter Issue 8 now available

    The Commission on Administrative Justice (Office of the Ombudsman) has recently published its eight issue of the Ombudsman Newsletter (January - March 2023). This newsletter's topics are, amongst others, the Ombudsman's partnerships, a review of "A decade of Service to Citizens in addressing Maladministration and Access to information in Kenya", and the DIAR Awards.

    Canadian Council of Parliamentary Ombudsman welcomes Prince Edward Island's first Ombudsperson

    Prince Edward Island’s (PEI) becomes the latest province to appoint an independent officer responsible for ensuring fairness and providing a safe avenue for whistleblower complaints in the public service. Sandy Hermiston will take office as the province’s first Ombudsperson and Public Interest Disclosure Commissioner on 14 February 2022. The Canadian Council of Parliamentary Ombudsman (CCPO) warmly welcomes the news.

    Ombudsman attends symposium of Justice and Accountability Programme

    The Office of the Ombudsman attended the closing symposium of the 5 year Justice and Accountability Programme called Chilungamo at Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe. Through this program, the office received funding to implement seven main activities which were packaged into four strategic areas of resolution of backlog of cases, public awareness, stakeholder engagement and capacity building.

    The Office of the Ombudsman in Malawi has released its 2022 Annual Report, highlighting some of the successes registered in the year under review and prospects for 2023. Ombudsman Grace Malera presented the report before the Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament on Tuesday, 4 July 2023.

    The State Comptroller and Ombudsman presented the Ombudsman's 51st Annual Report to the Speaker of the Knesset

    On July 1, 2025 the State Comptroller and Ombudsman of Israel, Mr. Matanyahu Englman, presented to the Speaker of the Knesset (Israeli parliament) the Ombudsman Annual Report 51 for the year 2024. Nearly 22,000 complaints were received in 2024 representing an increase of 50% compared with 2019.

    Watchdog for the people: 50 years of the Victorian Ombudsman

    The Victorian Ombudsman marked its 50th anniversary on 30 October 2023, and to celebrate this milestone a report outlining its history had been tabled in Parliament on 31 October 2023. "Watchdog for the People | 50 Years of the Victorian Ombudsman" tracked the fascinating social, political and historical context for the establishment of the Victorian Ombudsman as well as the evolution of the Office and its powers.

    Annual Report on the activities of the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture in 2022

    On 18 December 2022, 20 years had passed since the adoption, by the UN General Assembly, of the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. Thanks to the implementation of the OPCAT into the Polish legal system, the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture has been operating in Poland for nearly 15 years already as part of the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights.

    Ombudsman Malera sworn in as MHRC Commissioner

    On Thursday, 5 October 2023, the Ombudsman of the Republic of Malawi Grace Tikambenji Malera took oath of office as Commissioner for the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC). Honorable Malera together with eight others were hosted to a swearing in ceremony by President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera at the Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe. The swearing-in ceremony follows their appointment by the President three weeks earlier.
