2020-12-14EU Ombudsman asks Commission to improve approval process for substances in pesticides
The Ombudsman has made three suggestions to the European Commission to improve the process of approving “active substances” – the components in pesticides that act against specific pests or plant diseases – for use in pesticides. The Ombudsman asked the Commission to approve active substances only for uses that have been confirmed as safe by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA); to publish an explanation of its approvals of active substances in language easily understandable to the public; and to use the confirmatory data procedure with particular restraint.

Ombudsman Hong Kong probes into management and effectiveness of waste separation bins
On 30 November, Ombudsman Ms Winnie Chiu announced the launch of a direct investigation to examine the management of waste separation bins by the Environment Bureau and the Environmental Protection Department (EPD), and the effectiveness of the relevant programme.

Western Australia Ombudsman Chris Field has tabled in Parliament the report of a major own motion investigation on “Preventing suicide by children and young people 2020”. The 2020 Investigation examines what is known about suicide and self-harm by Western Australian children and young people, current strategic frameworks, and data obtained during the Ombudsman’s investigation.

Prisons and prisoners in Europe in pandemic times
During the month of March 2020, most European countries introduced lockdowns of their populations to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Such measures can have an impact on the extent of crime and, indirectly, on the size of prison populations. In order to measure the side-effects of the pandemic on the prison populations the Council of Europe and the University of Lausanne launched the SPACE I – COVID-19 project to follow closely the effects of the pandemic on prisons, inmates and probationers across Europe.
