Ombuds institutions of the Kingdom voice the concern of the people
The Kingdom of the Netherlands consists of four countries: Aruba, Sint Maarten, Curaçao and the Netherlands. Each year, the ombuds institutions of the kingdom meet each other and discuss challenges, successes and experiences. This year, they met in Aruba as this country now too will very soon have its own ombuds institution.

The Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman releases an investigation report
The Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman investigated a complaint about a fall in the standard of care given to a young woman with complex medical needs when she turned 18. Through her childhood years, the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust delivered an effective care package to the young woman, who had learning difficulties and a life limiting illness.

NSW infant and child death rates are declining overall but there are inequalities for some groups of infants and children
On 27 November 2023, the Biennial report of the deaths of children in New South Wales: 2020 and 2021, incorporating reviewable deaths of children, had been tabled in Parliament. The report details how infant and child mortality rates in NSW fell between 2007 and 2021.

The Right to Good Administration discussed in Malta
From 31 October to 1 November 2023, Malta hosted a landmark event that brought to the fore a crucial topic in contemporary governance: "The Right to Good Administration: Myth, Aspiration, and Reality?" The conference, a collaborative effort between the Office of the Ombudsman in Malta and the Association of Mediterranean Ombudsmen, was a melting pot of ideas and experiences.

2022-2023 Annual Report of the Office of the Taxpayers' Ombudsperson: Emphasis on the Taxpayer Bill of Rights
On 28 November 2023, Canada’s Taxpayers’ Ombudsperson, Mr. François Boileau, released his annual report, Upholding Your Rights, which was tabled in the House of Commons by Ms. Iqra Khalid, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Revenue. The report provides an overview of the activities of the Office of the Taxpayers’ Ombudsperson (OTO) between 1 April 2022 and 31 March 2023.

On 6 November 2023, the Honourable Federal Commissioner Public Complaints Commission, Anambra State, Hon. Lolo Emelda Nwajiofor-Okoli, led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Engr. Dr Felix Odumegwu, at the Ministry of Environment, State Secretariat complex, Awka. Hon. Nwajiofor-Okoli engaged the Commissioner for Environment on the crucial role of the Public Complaints Commission as a watchdog for addressing administrative grievances affecting Anambrarians.

Civil Aviation Authority’s decision-making on New Zealand Sign Language in airline safety briefing videos unreasonable
The Chief Ombudsman has found that the Civil Aviation Authority’s decision-making processes were unreasonable when it decided not to amend the rules to include New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) in airline safety briefing videos. Peter Boshier began investigating after receiving a complaint from Deaf Action NZ about the response the CAA gave to its 2018 petition, calling for NZSL to be included.

Tranquilisers instead of individual support: even such cases are encountered during the Defender’s visits to residential facilities for people with disabilities
The stories of two men with mental disabilities, recorded by employees of the Defender’s Office during their visits, illustrate a phenomenon, which has mostly been overlooked so far: some people with mental disabilities, especially those with challenging behaviour, receive high doses of tranquilisers. According to the Deputy Defender, this practice has to change. Behaviour is often the only possible form of communication for people who cannot otherwise make contact with others. It is therefore necessary that the latter understand the unmet needs behind the patient’s challenging behaviour and be able to respond accordingly. Tranquillisers must not be the first, let alone the only and permanent “solution”.

Under the chairmanship of Major Azam Suleman Khan (Retd) (Hilal-i-Imtiaz), Hon’ble Ombudsman Punjab, the Office of Ombudsman Punjab (Pakistan) celebrated the International Children's Day with great enthusiasm. Chief Provincial Commissioner for Children, Ombudsman Punjab and senior officers of the Office were also present on the occasion.

The NSW Ombudsman’s Oversight of the Public Interest Disclosures Act 1994 Annual Report 2022-23 has been tabled in Parliament on 27 November 2023. The annual report outlines the activities undertaken by the Ombudsman’s office, including provision of advice and training, and monitoring and auditing activities, under the PID Act 1994.

Annual Report on the activities of the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture in 2022
On 18 December 2022, 20 years had passed since the adoption, by the UN General Assembly, of the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. Thanks to the implementation of the OPCAT into the Polish legal system, the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture has been operating in Poland for nearly 15 years already as part of the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights.
