IOI President meets the Australian Ambassador to the Holy See and Chargé d'Affaires of the Australian Embassy in Italy
Immediately prior to the international Ombudsman conference in Rome commencing, IOI President Chris Field PSM was delighted to meet the Australian Ambassador to the Holy See, Her Excellency Ms Chiara Porro. Importantly, 2023 marks 50 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Australia and the Holy See. It was also President Field’s pleasure to meet the Chargé d'Affaires of the Australian Embassy in Italy, Ms Mary Ellen Miller.

Ombudsman finds Victoria’s electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle charges administered unfairly
On 27 September 2023, Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass tabled her Investigation into the Department of Transport and Planning’s implementation of the zero and low emission vehicle charge. The report details a range of failures in the State Government’s implementation of the road-user charge for electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles under the Zero and Low Emission Vehicles Act 2021.

In the light of the violence at the Pride Parade in Maribor Human Rights Ombudsman Peter Svetina condemned expressions of intolerance and violence and emphasised that prejudice, discrimination, and exclusion due to sexual orientation, sexual identity, and other personal circumstances are unfortunately still present in society, despite being unacceptable.

The Office of the Ombudsman of Israel has the pleasure of sharing with the international Ombudsman community an article written by Ms. Merav Fox Sobol, Senior Deputy Head of Department at the Office of the Ombudsman, in collaboration with two Israeli scholars. Parliamentary Ombudsman Petri Jääskeläinen presented his annual report for 2022
Parliamentary Ombudsman Petri Jääskeläinen presented his annual report for 2022 to the first Deputy Speaker of Parliament Juho Eerola on Thursday 15 June. In 2022, there were a total of 6,613 complaints. This is the third largest number of complaints ever recorded. The largest number of complaints concerned social welfare, the police, healthcare and criminal sanctions. In the reporting year, 6,857 complaints were resolved.

The Ombudsman of Thailand acknowledged an appeal about Chonburi Provincial Social Development and Human Society Office’s delayed payment of funeral expenses for the elderly according to the traditional life style. The fact states that the number of passing elderlies is higher than the budget allocated to the Department of Older Persons.

Ombudsperson for Children held workshop on "The role of Ombudsman and Mediators in monitoring the situation of children in conflict with the law and deprived of their liberty"
The Office of the Ombudsperson for Children in collaboration with the International Ombudsman Institute organised a two-day workshop on 5 and 6 September 2023, which brought together professionals from various governmental institutions, representatives of the Ministry of Gender Equality and the Prime Minister's Office, as well as NGOs, thus creating a rich and diverse debate.

International Ombudsman Conference took place in Rome
The International Ombudsman Conference entitled 'The Role of the Ombudsman in the World: Between Reality and Possibilities' was held in Rome on 21 and 22 September 2023. The Conference brought together Ombudsman colleagues, government representatives, experts and academics from all over the world.

Ombudsman implements new child-friendly section on the ombudsman website
Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier says the aim of this new section is to provide information to tamariki, rangatahi and whānau who may be considering making a complaint about Oranga Tamariki or its care or custody providers. The development of the information for children is part of a wider programme to enhance the Ombudsman’s oversight of Oranga Tamariki.

PCC facilitates the restoration of electricity to Ago-Ayo Community after two years of total darkness
The Osun State Office of the Public Complaints Commission (PCC) has recovered the Ago-Ayo Community Transformer after it was taken away by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) for Repair. Mr Raphael Adeniyi Adeniran, the Chairman of the Community on behalf of the Community had earlier written to complain to the Commission on the attitude of IBEDC HQ.

The Ombudsman Institution releases 2022 Annual Report
In accordance with the national legislative framework, the Institution of the Human Rights Ombudsman of Bosnia and Herzegovina submits an Annual Report on the results of its work in the previous year to the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the legislatures of the entities – the National Assembly of Republika Srpska and the Parliament of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The annual report 2022 is now available.
