    Ombudsman holds a Good Decision-Making training for Correctional Services Solomon Islands (CSSI) Senior Management Officers

    The Solomon Islands Ombudsman and his executive successfully completed a two days’ Good Decision-Making Training Workshop with the Senior Management Team of the Correctional Service of Solomon Islands (CSSI). The workshop was based on the theme: “Cutting the Cost of Bad Decision Making in Public Offices” and was held at the St Barnabas Leaf Haus in Honiara, from 3rd to 4th of October, 2022.

    National Ombudsman undertakes Peer Review

    On October 21-22 in Manchester, the UK National Ombudsman will be submitting itself to an IOI-led Ombudsman peer review. The UK National Ombudsman undertook its first peer review in 2018.  Since then, the Ombudsman has led the international effort to establish peer review as a critical tool to assess effectiveness more broadly, including against the Venice Principles. As a result, there are now IOI best practice papers and guidance on the subject.

    Implementation of Recommendations

    The Commonwealth Ombudsman, Mr Iain Anderson, published a report, Did They Do What They Said They Would? volume 2, on 17 October 2022.  The report contains point-in-time assessments that measure the progress made by 8 agencies to implement 73 accepted recommendations made by the Office in 10 reports between 1 July 2019 and 30 June 2021.

    Regional meeting held in New Zealand

    The IOI’s Australasian & Pacific Region (APOR) held a conference on 13 October 2022 and its 34th annual members’ meeting on 14 October 2022 in Wellington, New Zealand. The conference, on remaining relevant and getting government to listen, was co-hosted by Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass OBE as Regional President and New Zealand Chief Ombudsman and IOI 2nd Vice President Peter Boshier.

    Ombuds institutes have a special role in the social justice landscape of their countries that enables them to make significant contributions to the achievement of the SDGs and help close the global justice gap. A recent workshop allowed participating ombuds institutes to share their efforts to improve security sector governance as a core element of realizing SDG 16 on peaceful, just, and inclusive societies.     Health care complaints to B.C. Ombudsperson highest in ten years

    The BC Ombudsperson’s 2021/22 Annual Report, released 18 October, highlights that complaints about health care from British Columbians were the highest in a decade. The office received almost 1,300 complaints and enquiries focused on programs and services provided by the Ministry of Health and B.C.’s health authorities.

    Alberta Ombudsman and Public Interest Commissioner welcomed distinguished guests from Nigeria

    The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions of the Republic of Nigeria paid an official visit to the Alberta Legislative Assembly and the office of the Alberta Ombudsman. The one-week visit was initiated by the Chairman of the Senate Committee, and leader of the delegation, Senator (Dr.) Patrick Ayo Akinyelure, with a view to fostering relations and collaboration.
