In the labour market, women still remain predominant in lower-paid sectors, are under-represented in leading positions, and are also subjected to violence and harassment. "We need to eradicate the idea that it is permissible to encroach on women's rights," said Human Rights Ombudsman Peter Svetina on the occasion of International Women's Day, which is celebrated on 8 March.

    Ceslav Panico has been appointed People’s Advocate (Ombudsman) Moldova for a term of seven years. A decision in this regard was approved by the Parliament on February 3, 2022, with the vote of 57 deputies. During the same meeting, Ceslav Panico took the oath.

    Chancellor of Justice Ülle gives oath of office before parliament ahead of second term

    Ülle Madise, who was appointed for a second term as Estonian Chancellor of Justice, gave the oath of office in the Riigikogu on 4 April. Parliament approved Madise’s second term on 15 December last year. In a secret ballot, her continuation in the role was supported by 63 MPs, with 18 against and one abstention.

    Prince Edward Island’s (PEI) becomes the latest province to appoint an independent officer responsible for ensuring fairness and providing a safe avenue for whistleblower complaints in the public service. Sandy Hermiston will take office as the province’s first Ombudsperson and Public Interest Disclosure Commissioner on 14 February 2022.     Public Protector to sign agreement with Gauteng Premier as part of stakeholder roadshow

    The Public Protector South Africa (PPSA) and the Gauteng Provincial Government are set to enter into an agreement aimed at ensuring that requests for investigation-related information, among other things, are responded promptly to expedite investigative processes.     Public Defender of Georgia Becomes Member of IOI Board of Directors

    We are pleased to announce that on November 15, 2021, the Public Defender of Georgia, for the first time in the history of the Public Defender’s Office, has started fulfilling the duties of a member of the Board of Directors of the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI). The Public Defender’s Office will represent the European region in the Board. The Office was elected a member of the European region in 2019. The Board of Directors oversees the organization's activities and makes decisions about its future activities.

    Ombudsman for Wales publishes “Principles of Good Administration” and “Good Records Management Matters”

    The Public Services Ombudsman for Wales reviewed the "Principles of Good Administration" published by the Office in 2016.     Ombudsperson voice criticism over reception conditions in Kybartai Foreigners’ Registration Centre

    After a visit to Kybartai Foreigners’ Registration Center, the Head of the Seimas Ombudsmen’s Office, Erika Leonaitė, published an NPM report. The Seimas Ombudsperson concludes that all the conditions applicable to foreigners in Kybartai FRC are equivalent to inhuman or degrading treatment prohibited under the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
