georgia | Public Defender’s Office held information meetings on equality

In the period from May to August 2022, employees of the Equality Department of the Public Defender’s Office held meetings with employees of the city halls and councils of the municipalities of Zemo Adjara, Kakheti, Shida Kartli and Mtskheta Mtianeti, as well as representatives of local religious and ethnic minority groups.

The role and obligations of local self-government bodies in the process of achieving equality in the country were discussed at the meetings. Representatives of the Public Defender provided the local population with information about anti-discrimination legislation and mechanisms for the restoration of rights, and listened to the problems relating to the realization of the right to equality.

The meetings were carried out with the support of the Open Society Georgia Foundation Project "Support to the Public Defender in Combating Far-Right Politics" and with the assistance of the Eastern and Western Divisions of the Public Defender. The informational meetings are a continuation of the Public Defender's educational activities on equality issues, which the Office will actively continue to plan in the future.
