    First Remote Media Training held

    On 19 November 2020, the IOI successfully held its first session of the IOI Remote Media Training. The interest in this training was enormous and participants from all six IOI world regions applied. In this first training session, a total of 18 persons from 18 different Ombudsman institutions from all corners of the globe took part in this high-end media training.

    The International Ombudsman Institute is very happy to report that the UN resolution on the role of the Ombudsman (A/RES/72/186) was adopted by consensus on 19 November 2020 and that the final version of the resolution is due to be adopted by the UN General Assembly before the end of the year.

    On 24 November 2020, the State Comptroller and Ombudsman of Israel held an international Zoom Webinar under the auspices of the IOI on the topic of “Covid-19 and the Ombudsperson - Rising to the Challenge of a Pandemic”. The webinar brought together participants from 50 Ombudsman offices around the world to learn how a long-term crisis can still act as a platform for best practices and improvement.

    Online seminar on the role of NHRIs in public emergencies

    Based on the ODIHR Reference Tool supporting NHRIs during public emergencies, ENNHRI and ODIHR will hold an online seminar on the “Role of NHRIs in Public Emergencies” on 11 December 2020 from 9h00 – 13h00 CET.     First Lady launches anti-corruption campaign 2020

    The First Lady Mrs Janet Museveni launched the Anti-Corruption Campaign 2020 at State House Entebbe with a call on fighting corruption right from the family level. The function was organised by the Inspectorate of Government (IGG) in partnership with the Global Leadership Summit. It was attended by heads of anti-corruption agencies and representatives from Justice, the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda and the Global Leadership Summit.

    Susan E. Opler has officially announced her decision to retire from her position as Ombudsman Toronto, effective 21 April 2021. In her farewell message, Ombudsman Opler emphasizes that it has been an honour and privilege to serve as Toronto’s Ombudsman and thanks her dedicated staff.

    Ontario announces re-appointment of Ombudsman and Integrity Commissioner

    The Legislative Assembly of Ontario has reappointed both its Ombudsman and Integrity Commissioner for another five years. Ombudsman Paul Dubé and Integrity Commissioner Hon. J. David Wake have served in their current roles since 2016. Their respective terms as Officers of the Assembly were extended by a unanimous vote of MPPs at Queen’s Park on 30 November 2020.

    The Coepio Foundation presents a cycle of interviews on “Gutsy Leadership”. Within this interview cycle, Coepio presents women leaders and their fight for human rights. The next session, which will take place on 9 December 2020, will feature Ms Victoria Pearman, the Ombudsman for Bermuda and Regional President of the IOI’s Caribbean & Latin American Region.

    Chief Ombudsman of Turkey re-elected to the post

    Mr. Şeref Malkoç has been re-elected as Chief Ombudsman of Turkey by the General Assembly of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey on 11 November 2020. Mr Malkoç, a 60-year-old prominent lawyer and former member of the Parliament, was sworn in on the 1 December 2020 at the Parliament. Performing this duty since 05 December 2016, Mr. Malkoç’s new mandate will be for another four years until 2024.
