The World Bank, the Global Partnership for Social Accountability, the Nordic Trust Fund and the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) will hold a round table discussion in Washington D.C. on Tuesday, 25 March 2014 to raise awareness and promote a better understanding on the ombudsman’s role regarding the accountability of public service delivery as well as open government.

On 14 March 2014 the Office of the Complaints Commissioner (OCC) of the Cayman Islands released an own motion investigation report regarding the protection of whistleblowers. The report is the result of an investigation to ascertain whether there are adequate protections or protective measures for reporters of wrongdoing (also known as Whistleblowers) within the Cayman Islands Government - including, but not limited to, legislation, policy, and work culture, custom and practice.

On 28 February 2014 the Ombudsman of Ukraine Mrs. Valeriya Lutkovska presented her Special Report on “Violations of human rights and freedoms during events which happened in Ukraine over the period since 21 November 2013 to 22 February 2014” according to paragraph 3 Article 18 of the Law on the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights.

On the occasion of the General Assembly Meeting of the International Coordinating Committee of National Human Rights Institutions (ICC) at the UN Office in Geneva, the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI) made a statement on the human rights situation in Ukraine.

In the course of the Ombudsman’s intervention it was revealed that the deduction was illegal and deprived the family affected of their legitimate right.

The Parliamentary Ombudsman believes that the proposals include essential measures to be taken for a correct evolution of the Institution in a modern and democratic society.

Ontario Ombudsman André Marin today welcomed the provincial government’s announcement that it will extend his office’s mandate into the “MUSH sector” – the vast, provincially-funded broader public sector comprising municipalities, universities, school boards and hospitals, as well as long-term care homes, children’s aid societies and police.
