Lithuania | Seimas Ombudsmen's Office publishes Annual Report 2016

The Seimas Ombudsmen's Office of the Republic of Lithuania has been defending human rights and freedoms and investigating complaints about the abuse of office by or bureaucracy of state and municipal officials and since 2014 has been monitoring human rights at places of detention. The Ombudsman Institution has now published its Annual Report of the year 2016, detailing its activities and initiatives.

In 2016 the Seimas Ombudsmen received 2,520 applications from natural and legal persons. It examined complaints embracing various spheres of life, including problems with the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, health care, state-guaranteed legal assistance, social support, supervision of the activities of apartment block owners' association, renovation of apartment blocks, etc.

When investigating the complaints, the focus is on the importance of the principles of justice and rule of law, as well as the aim of achieving compliance of all officials with laws. In 2016 the Seimas Ombudsmen devoted special attention not only to the effective investigation of complaints but also to the promotion of the principles of the rule of law, proper administration and respect for human rigths.
