2021-01-25Public Defender’s special statement on situation in penitentiary establishments
In 2020, the Public Defender of Georgia published a special report, in which she talked about the fact that the management model of semi-open establishments was based on informal hierarchy of prisoners, where the so-called "prison watchers" provide fictitious order, which aims to silence prisoners and prevent them from talking about their problems. The publication of this report was followed by public attacks on the Public Defender and illegal actions by the Minister of Justice and the Penitentiary Service. As a result, it has becomedangerous for the representatives of the Public Defender's Office to carry out visits and monitoring at the penitentiary establishments.

The Ombudsman of Hong Kong, Ms Connie Lau, published the Office of The Ombudsman’s Brief Report 2018 on 31 January. The Office received a total of 10,130 enquiries and 4,870 complaints in 2018. The figures were at similar levels to those in the past few years, with an average of 850 enquiries and 400 complaints per month.

Representatives of the Public Defender’s office visited the checkpoints set up for quarantine purposes in Marneuli, Rustavi and Mtskheta, where servicemen of the Defense Forces are deployed together with representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to evaluate the working conditions, health care procedures and monitored the procedures carried out by the military towards citizens at the checkpoints.

2024-03-28Italy-Argentina: Bilateral Meeting in the Name of Civil Defense
At the Regional Council of Lazio, a meeting took place between Marino Fardelli, Civil Ombudsman of Lazio and President of the Coordination of Italian Civil Ombudsmen, and Walter Domingo Martello, Vice General Civil Ombudsman of the Province of Buenos Aires. The purpose of the meeting was to exchange experiences between the two institutions, and this goal was fully achieved with a commitment to continue in the future.

On 15 March 2019, the “Principles on the Protection and Promotion of the Ombudsman Institution”, (“The Venice Principles”) were adopted by the Venice Commission. Pursuant to Human Rights Council Resolution on the Right to Privacy in the Digital Age, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights will organise an expert seminar to discuss how artificial intelligence (AI) affects the enjoyment of the right to privacy. The seminar will take place on 27 - 28 May 2020 and will be held online.
