Fernández Marugán viaja a Ceuta y Melilla para entrevistarse con autoridades y ONG
El Defensor del Pueblo (e.f.), Francisco Fernández Marugán, ha realizado una visita oficial a las ciudades autónomas de Ceuta y Melilla del 1 al 4 de junio para entrevistarse con autoridades y representantes de ONG. Fernández Marugán ha querido conocer de primera mano la situación en ambas ciudades tras la entrada a nado en Ceuta de numerosas personas extranjeras la semana del 17 de mayo. Al Defensor le preocupa especialmente la acogida de los menores extranjeros no acompañados.

This year the National Ombudsman has also published his annual report as a Magazine. The National Ombudsman has opted for the digital annual magazine in order to clarify the work of the National Ombudsman institute to professionals (e.g. complaint handlers, intermediaries, academics, etc.).

New statute: Ombudsman welcomes legal strengthening of her Office
European Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly welcomes the Parliament’s approval (602 votes out of the 692 cast) of a strengthened legal framework for her Office. The revised statute strengthens the legal base of the Ombudsman and introduces new safeguards to further guarantee its independence, including an adequate budget to support the Office’s activities.

Nouveau statut : la Médiatrice se félicite du renforcement du cadre juridique de son bureau
La Médiatrice européenne, Emily O'Reilly, se félicite du fait que le Parlement ait approuvé le renforcement du cadre juridique de son bureau (602 votes sur 692 votants). La révision du statut va permettre de renforcer la base juridique du Médiateur, introduire des garanties supplémentaires pour assurer son indépendance, y compris un budget approprié pour soutenir les activités du bureau.

Dublin Declaration adopted by IOI General Assembly
The Dublin Declaration sets out the contribution Ombudsman organisations will make to the UN Agenda 2030, especially the prerequisite of leaving ‘no one behind’ and ensuring that all persons can fulfil their potential in equality. The declaration commits to working towards achieving equality of access to vaccination, urging vaccines to be treated as a global public good to be made available equally around the globe.

Northern Ireland Ombudsman proposes new complaints handling standards for public bodies
The Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman, Margaret Kelly, has today called for a culture change in the way public bodies in Northern Ireland deal with complaints from members of the public. Her comments came as a new survey showed two thirds of people who were dissatisfied with the level of service from a public body said they would not complain as they thought it would make no difference or be too trivial.

Police force runs intelligence training with Ombudsman investigators
Officers of the Ombudsman undertook a short training on how Intelligence could be used to help boost their investigations. The training was coordinated by the Director of the National Intelligence Unit, Superintendent Frazer Tambe.
