“Your Voice Plants the Seeds of Change” – Control Yuan NHRC Releases Systematic Inquiry Report on Child and Youth Sexual Abuse Cases
On 8 January 2025, the Control Yuan National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) held a press conference to release its special report, “Your Voice Plants the Seeds of Change - Systematic Inquiry Report on Sexual Abuse in Schools and Placement Institutions.” The investigation results were jointly announced by supervising committee members Chu-Fang Chang, Chiu-Chin Tien, and Li-Chiung Su.

Slovak Ombudsman visits Ombudsperson Schwetz
On 21 January 2025, the current Chairperson of the Austrian Ombudsman Board (AOB), Ms. Elisabeth Schwetz, welcomed the Public Defender of Rights of the Slovak Republic, Mr. Róbert Dobrovodský, and his delegation at the premises of the AOB. Mr. Dobrovodský was accompanied by staff members specialised in fundamental rights and NPM matters. The purpose of this inaugural visit was an exchange on thematic areas such as police matters and human rights.

Government interference puts Yukoners rights at risk
The Minister of Finance has declined a request from the Yukon Ombudsman, Information and Privacy Commissioner, and Public Interest Disclosure Commissioner, Jason Pedlar, to cease Government of Yukon’s unprecedented insertion into his budgetary process, and follow the legislated procedures designed to safeguard the independence of his three mandates. The Minister’s response has forced Pedlar to explore legal action to uphold international standards and protect the rights of Yukoners.

Toronto Ombudsman finds major gaps with police’s registry for vulnerable persons
On 5 September 2024, Toronto's Ombudsman released his report, An Investigation into the Toronto Police Service’s Communications About its Vulnerable Persons Registry. The TPS launched the registry in December of 2019 to allow the public to file personalized de-escalation strategies to help police officers support individuals with emotional, psychological, medical, or other physical conditions. Four years later, the Ombudsman’s investigation found that only 305 people currently have their information entered into the registry.

UN Resolution underlines important role of Ombudsman in achieving the SDGs
On 17 December 2024, the UN General Assembly adopted the Resolution on The role of Ombudsman and mediator institutions in the promotion and protection of human rights, good governance and the rule of law. This resolution is submitted biennially and the newly adopted version acknowledges the important contribution Ombudsman institutions make to ensure the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Goal 16 on building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.

The clinics are a proactive mechanism that the Office of the Ombudsman uses to take the Office to the people reaching the heart of communities in the rural areas or areas that are far from the main office.
