2020-01-08Ombudsman finds that rights of incapacitated individuals are still unduly restricted
A recent study by the Seimas Ombudsmen revealed that after the ongoing review of the incapacity of individuals, there are still more than 1,600 incapacitated individuals in the country, whose rights have so far been unduly restricted. These particularly puzzling findings were presented by the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office in a report.

Máté Szabó has requested the Minister for Public Administration and Justice to initiate as soon as possible an amendment to the Act on Legal Aid.

2020-01-03Control Yuan to Establish National Human Rights Commission
The CY passed the draft “Organic Law of the Control Yuan National Human Rights Commission,” as well as draft amendments to “the Organic Law of the Control Yuan” and “the Organic Act of the Control Yuan Committees,” at the 62nd plenary meeting on June 11, 2019. The bills were then sent for review and deliberation by the Legislative Yuan, which passed them into law on Human Rights Day on Dec. 10, 2019. With the promulgation of the new legislation, the CY National Human Rights Commission shall be established accordingly, marking a new era for the promotion and protection of human rights in Taiwan.

2020-01-02Human Rights Defender announced essay competition to promote inclusive education
The Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia announced an essay competition titled “My Friend” as a part of the #changetheworld awareness campaign to promote inclusive education. The award ceremony took place in November 2019 and the winners received prizes. The best essays have been published with the consent of the children.

2020-01-02FRA calls for solutions towards humane and effective migration
The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) called for humane and effective solutions in migration issues on International Migrants Day on 18 December. FRA highlighted that in 2019, migrants globally will top an estimated 272 million, of which many move by choice. However, many others flee armed conflict, persecution, or serious human rights violations. In 2018, the number of forcibly displaced people broke 70 million for the first time ever.

Following two IOI editions of the “Sharpening Your Teeth” training programme that were attended by 80 participants from all world regions, an IOI Ombudsman Practice Training was held this week in cooperation with the Scottish Queen Margaret University (QMU).

There is worse than prison: Temporary hostel of restricted access, Nyírbátor – on-the-spot inspections of the ombudsman. Buildings in terrible conditions, plastic bottles used instead of toilets, abused persons in detention, continuous violations of human dignity. Prof. Máté Szabó ombudsman asked the General Prosecutor, the Chief of Police of Hungary and the Minister of Internal Affairs for intervention after inspections made on the spot at Nyírbátor temporary hostel of restricted access.
