PAPUA NEW GUINEA | Ombudsman presents draft bills of enabling legislation to Prime Minister

The Members of the Ombudsman Commission – Acting Chief Ombudsman Mr Richard Pagen and Ombudsman Mr Kevin Kepore officially presented to the Prime Minister of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea Hon. James Marape on 7 January 2020 draft bills of the Commission’s enabling Legislation and other relevant policy documents.

The Prime Minister is the Minister responsible for the Ombudsman Commission of PNG.

The presentation comprised of

  1. the draft bill to amend the Constitution (relevant provisions);
  2. the draft bill to amend the Organic Law on the Ombudsman Commission;
  3. the draft bill to amend the Organic Law on Duties and Responsibilities of Leadership; and
  4. the Leadership Code (Alternative Penalties) (Amendment) Bill.

Upon receiving the draft bills, the Prime Minister congratulated the Commission and assured its members that he will ensure that the draft bills are submitted to parliament for consideration.

In addition the Prime Minister stressed that he would like the Ombudsman Commission to work with the Department of Prime Minister & NEC (National Executive Council) for the progress of the setting up of an Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) in Papua New Guinea.
