Michelle Morris took office as the new Public Services Ombudsman for Wales on 1 April 2022. She was previously Managing Director of Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council. Prior to that she worked for Highland Council in Scotland, for 10 years.

Challenges to human rights - Commissioner at the workshop for ombudspersons
"It is not just about populism as a political method, but about the use of populism to destroy constitutional courts. In such circumstances, the ombudsman must be a guardian of values such as human rights. It must be reliable in terms of legal solutions but also creative in terms of communication methods", said Adam Bodnar, the Commissioner for Human Rights at the workshop for ombudspersons organized on April 3-4 in Barcelona.

Human Rights Symposium held in Barcelona
IOI Europe’s Regional President Rafael Ribó hosted a workshop on human rights challenges, held in Barcelona from 3 – 4 April 2017, to resume the debate on the regression of rights launched a year ago. In light of recent political developments emphasis was particularly put on “Populism? Regression of Rights and the Role of the Ombudsman”. Representatives from IOI member institutions from all over Europe participated at this workshop to discuss and analyse the current situation and the role of the Ombudsman in this regard.

Office of the Ombudsman and RTHK collaborate again to produce drama series “Ombudsman Special II”
On 3rd April, the Ombudsman of Hong Kong, Ms. Connie Lau, announced at the launch ceremony of “Ombudsman Special II” that the drama series, jointly produced by the Office of The Ombudsman and Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), will be broadcast every Tuesday as of 4th April.

Establishment of the Office of the Ombudsman in Tonga
The initial name of Commissioner for Public Relations has been changed to Ombudsman. This is to put Tonga in line with other countries in calling the head of the Office "Ombudsman". The Office no longer holds the name "Office of the Commissioner for Public Relations" but is known now as "the Office of the Ombudsman."

IOI Delegation visits Hungarian-Ukrainian border
A delegation of the Board of Directors of the European Region of the IOI - International Ombudsman Institute, headed by Regional President and Ombudsman of Greece Andreas Pottakis and Board member and Ombudsman of Slovenia Peter Svetina, visited Hungary on 16 and 17 March. They met with their host, Commissioner for Fundamental Rights of Hungary Ákos Kozma, in Budapest on 16 March.
