Deputy-Ombudsman criticises children's hearings at foreign missions
Deputy-Ombudsman Maija Sakslin said she was not convinced that children's rights, legal protection and best interests are implemented in hearings associated with family reunification applications at Finland's foreign missions. The Deputy-Ombudsman investigated the issue on her own initiative and found that questionable and incorrect procedures were in use.

The Dutch National Ombudsman, the Ombudsman for Children and the Ombudsman for Veterans present their Annual Report 2021
The Dutch National Ombudsman, the Ombudsman for Children and the Ombudsman for Veterans have today presented their Annual Report 2021 to the House of Representatives. In it, they note that the resignation of the Dutch government in early 2021, the March elections and the long process that followed in forming a government resulted in a year of government silence and official introspection.

Victoria Pearman, Ombudsman for Bermuda, submitted her Annual Report for the calendar year 2016 to the Office of the Speaker of the House of Assembly in accordance with her statutory duty under the Ombudsman Act 2004. The Ombudsman's Annual Report for 2016 reports on the work of the Office from 1st January to 31st December 2016.

Graves deficiencias para evitar la deforestación ilegal
En un reciente informe, la Defensoría del Pueblo advierte las deficiencias del Estado para evitar la deforestación ilegal de la Amazonía peruana a causa de cultivos a gran escala. Así, solo entre los años 2010 y 2014, se reemplazaron 30,773 hectáreas de bosques amazónicos para cultivar palma aceitera y cacao.

La institución señaló que antes de dar de baja el beneficio, los ciudadanos deben recibir una notificación fehaciente y tener posibilidad de ejercer su derecho a la defensa. El 30 y el 31 de marzo, el Comité de Asuntos Domésticos y Étnicos y el Comité de Asuntos Financieros y Económicos realizaron una visita de inspección al Consejo para los Asuntos Hakka y al Consejo de Agricultura del Yuan Ejecutivo, con el objetivo de conocer la efectividad de sus trabajos y las prioridades futuras. Trailblazing Ombudsman has passed away
New Zealand’s first female Ombudsman, Nadja Tollemache OBE, has passed away at her home in Auckland. Ms Tollemache, who served as Ombudsman from 13 May 1987 to 30 June 1992, died peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones.

Ombudsman reviews processes of school closures and mergers
Last week the New Zealand Office of the Ombudsman released the results of its most significant and comprehensive investigations. “Disclosure” presents the findings and recommendations of a review into processes for school closures and mergers in New Zealand, with a particular focus on the wide-scale school reorganisation that took place after the Canterbury earthquakes of 2011.

Ombudsman Hong Kong presents results of two own-motion investigations
On 28 June 2017 Hong Kong Ombudsman Connie Lau announced the completion of two own-motioned investigations, namely “The arrangement between Housing Department and Water Supplies Department regarding payment of water charges for common areas and vacant units in public housing estates” and “Food and Environmental Hygiene Department’s criteria for publicising the list of traders involved after issuing a Food Safety Order”.

Panel discussion on Ombudsman under Pressure
On 22 June, the IOI invited to a panel discussion on “Ombudsmen under Pressure – Political, Democratic, Constitutional Restrictions and Limited Financial Conditions in our Neighbouring Countries”, which was organised jointly with the Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe (IDM) and the Austrian Ombudsman Board (AOB).

Slovenian Human Rights Ombudsman Peter Svetina attended a two-day conference of the European Network of Ombudsmen (ENO) in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. Hosted by the offices of the European and French human rights ombudsman's offices, representatives of European national and regional ombudsman institutions and other participants active in this field discussed the role of ombudsmen in times of crises.
