Poverty is an enemy of human rights and states are successful to the extent on how much they look after the most vulnerable, said Ombudswoman Lora Vidović at the opening of the conference on energy poverty, that she organised on the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty and Social Exclusion. The participants welcomed the new measures announced by the representative of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, Dean Smolar.

2017-10-23South Australian Ombudsman releases Annual Report 2016-17
The Ombudsman tabled his 2016/2017 Annual Report in Parliament on 18 October 2017. The Report highlights that complaints about state and local government continue to rise significantly; there has been an increase of 14% in complaints made to the Ombudsman’s Office this financial year. Applications for external reviews of determinations made under the Freedom of Information Act 1991 went up 44%.

On 1 August 2022, Ms. Gaby Schwarz took office as the new Secretary General of the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI). Ms. Schwarz was sworn in as a member of the Austrian Ombudsman Board on 11 July 2022 and takes over the office of IOI Secretary General from her predecessor Werner Amon, who resigned as Austrian Ombudsman at the end of June 2022.

Adv. Tlotliso Angelina Polaki is the newly appointed Ombudsman of Lesotho, effective 6 June 2022. Adv. Tlotliso Polaki graduated from the National University of Lesotho and was appointed and served as a magistrate, at the Maseru Magistrate Court for a number of years. In June 2022, Adv. Tlotliso Polaki was appointed as the Ombudsman of the Kingdom of Lesotho.

Emite CNDH recomendación al gobierno de Oaxaca, Fiscalía general del estado, Comisionado Nacional de Seguridad y Procurados General de la Repúblic, por violaciones graves a derechos humanos en los hechos de violencia ocurridos en Nochixtlán, Oaxaca, el pasado 16 de junio de 2016. El operativo para liberar vialidades no fue debidamente diseñado, preparado, coordinado y ejecutado, ni se observaron plenamente los protocolos de actuación, sobre todo por lo que hace al uso legítimo de la fuerza y la necesidad de priorizar mecanismos y técnicas no violentas antes de utilizar la fuerza contra la población.

At a press conference held at the premises of the Human Rights Ombudsman of the Republic of Slovenia on Tuesday, 5 September 2017, Human Rights Ombudsman Vlasta Nussdorfer and Deputy Ombudsman Ivan Šelih presented a special report, which the Ombudsman had sent to the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia the previous day. The report considers the issue of overcrowded secure wards in social care institutions (particularly special social care institutions) and difficulties faced by persons with a mental disorder in these wards, drawing attention to violations of their right to personal dignity.

2017-10-12Foster children disadvantaged by council policy
Councils are putting foster children at a disadvantage compared to their peers when it comes to school transport, the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman has found. The Ombudsman is now asking councils across England to check their approach after it emerged foster children living further away from school than their peers were being treated differently by Warwickshire County Council.
