Plus de 92 % des réclamations reçues par le Défenseur des droits en 2023 concernaient les droits des usagers des services publics. L’institution a publié le 24 juin 2024 un rapport intitulé « Droits des usagers des services publics : de la médiation aux propositions de réformes », qui s’appuie sur la contribution de différents médiateurs, et met en avant des propositions en vue d’un meilleur respect des droits des usagers et de l’amélioration des relations entre usagers et administrations.

The Caribbean and Latin American region of the IOI, one of the six regions, elected the Ombudsman of Curaçao, Mr. Keursly Concincion, as its Regional President on June, 25th 2024. Mr. Concincion was the only candidate standing for the position. The current appointment is for four years.

Whistleblowing on the rise, growing number of complaints
The last week of June marks World Whistleblower Day and Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier says he is very heartened to know that people seem to feel more comfortable about reporting issues. In 2022/2023 the Chief Ombudsman received 128 protected disclosures and enquiries, which was an 80% increase from the previous year (with 71 received in 2021/22).

Annual Report 2023 – a credible and trusted institution closer to the people
On 8 July 2024, the Parliamentary Ombudsman, Judge Emeritus Joseph Zammit McKeon, presented the Annual Report 2023 to the Speaker of the House, Anglu Farrugia. Throughout 2023, the Office of the Ombudsman focused on enhancing its working relationship with the public administration. It adopted an open-door policy, reaching out to the public and government entities alike.

Reminder: Tender for IOI regional subsidies 2024/2025 still open
The IOI Board of Directors decided at their Board meeting held in The Hague in May 2024 to continue the regional subsidy programme for the membership year 2024/2025. Members wishing to apply for regional subsidies are invited to submit project proposals until 5 August 2024.
