Defensoría del Pueblo inicia supervisión a 79 residencias estudiantiles ubicadas principalmente en regiones amazónicas del país
A raíz de las denuncias por violencia sexual contra niños y adolescentes indígenas awajún, la Defensoría del Pueblo inicia el 19 de agosto de 2024 una supervisión a 79 instituciones educativas públicas que implementan el modelo de servicio educativo de secundaria con residencia estudiantil, las mismas que se ubican mayormente en regiones amazónicas del país. El objetivo de la supervisión será verificar las condiciones de acceso, permanencia y logro de aprendizajes, así como las condiciones en que viven los estudiantes y las medidas que se han adoptado para proteger su integridad.

The report follows an investigation involving a systemic examination of how inmate discipline is managed across all correctional centres. The inmate disciplinary system deals with inmates who are alleged to have committed a ‘correctional centre offence’ while in custody.

Case study: claims of unfair promotion practices in the armed forces of Malta
A Major in the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) lodged a complaint after he was not promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel despite meeting the eligibility criteria. He claimed the selection process for the promotion was flawed and that he suffered an injustice as a result. The investigation by the Parliamentary Ombudsman of Malta examined the selection process used for promotions from Major to Lieutenant Colonel within the AFM.

Report on Townsville’s Cleveland Youth Detention Centre released
The Cleveland Youth Detention Centre inspection report: Focus on separation due to staff shortages, prepared by the Inspector of Detention Services, was tabled by the Honourable Curtis Pitt MP, Speaker of the Queensland Parliament on Tuesday 27 August 2024. The report by Queensland Ombudsman, Mr Anthony Reilly makes 15 recommendations for improvement at the Cleveland Youth Detention Centre on issues including staffing levels, approval processes for separations and the provision of basic facilities in separation rooms and holding cells.

El Defensor del Pueblo de los Servicios Públicos de Irlanda del Norte y el profesor Chris Gill (Universidad de Glasgow) están llevando a cabo un proyecto de investigación conjunto que examina el papel de los defensores del pueblo en la protección de los refugiados y solicitantes de asilo (el proyecto OPRAS). La encuesta correspondiente, cuyo objetivo es conocer el trabajo de los defensores del pueblo en este ámbito e identificar buenas prácticas, sigue abierta hasta el 27 de septiembre de 2024. The Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman and Professor Chris Gill (University of Glasgow) are conducting a joint research project examining the role of ombudspersons in the protection of refugees and asylum seekers (the OPRAS project). The corresponding survey, whose aim is to understand the work of ombudspersons in this area and to identify good practice, is still open until 27 September 2024.
